Sorry if I am being a bit picky but "rough machining" gives the wrong inference. Correctly they are proof machined to a finish that it would be unfair to describe as rough. This is to basically demonstrate the integrity of the tyre and to permit non destructive testing for inclusions, laminations, and surface breaking defects. They are sourced from SA via Rob le Chevalier on the South Devon who is Kwik-Fitting them for us.

    Regards
    Bob

Thanks for that info Bob. I have often wondered why the finish was so good on what is, essentialy, a "rough" machining operation.

I know it's a while before we see 5029 turn a wheel. But what would the chances be of it conquering Shap & Ais Gill like 5043 has done in the past??

I think we all realise this is a typo but just for info 5029 was in steam on Tuesday and regularly "turns a wheel" and will be venturing north (not that far though) in a few weeks.

We haven't posted an update in a while, so I thought I should give a quick update (from the August news-letter) -

    TENDER

The tender tank has received some major attention. All but the back, sides and fenders have been replaced with new steel. The new baffles, top and bottom plates have been permanently welded in place, leaving just the sump to be welded into the bottom and the fenders re-installed along the top-edges.

The installation of the sump will require the tank to be lifted of the frames, allowing the new floor packing to be installed prior the tank being re-riveted to the frames.

    FRAMES AND WHEELS

The wheels have been re-tyred and are awaiting installation. The leading bogie has been re-installed in the frames. Horn-guides have been measured and ground, awaiting wheel and axle-box re-installation.

The frames themselves are in the process of receiving their last few coats of gloss paint before the wheels are installed.

    BOILER

All the spent stays have been removed. The stay-holes are in the process of being re-tapped awaiting the installation of the new stays. Nearly 400 stay-nuts have been manufactured and installed to date.

The material for the new fire-box corners has been delivered and is awaiting bending, shaping and drilling to fit.

    THE CORNISHMAN – 10[SUP]th[/SUP] MAY, 2014

This synopsis is by no means comprehensive and as you will appreciate there is still a great deal of work to do if we are to achieve our goal of returning ‘Clun’ to steam early 2014 in order to complete the running-in and testing prior to the 50[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary of the Devon-Banks record run, scheduled for May 10[SUP]th[/SUP], 2014.

Whilst a great deal of labour remains to be done, we also still have materials to buy. At present the price of engineering materials continues to escalate at alarming rates for instance white metal is now over £20 per kilo and refractory cement for the firebox brick arch, which cost £260 per ton when we finished 5043 and is now over £650 per ton. With such alarming increases, we have attempted to use much of the fund for purchasing many of the materials which we shall need, in order to make our funds go as far as possible before further inflation hits us.

If you feel that you would like to further help the project, either by volunteering for some of the many outstanding tasks, or by simply making a further donation, no matter how small, please do get in touch with us at Tyseley Locomotive Works, either by writing or by telephone on 0121 708 4960, or visit our on-line donation page: Charity Giving - 7029 Clun Castle Overhaul - General Fund

Just a quick note to say Clun is now back on it's wheels, with cab-sides and splashers fitted.

Come and see the latest progress this Sunday 28 Oct at the Tyseley Steam Open Day.

Clun Castle has been reunited with its boiler and will be on display Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June at the Tyseley Loco Works Open Weekend.

Why not pop down and see the progress for yourself!

    Press Release:

Saturday 11th June marked a momentous occasion in railway preservation history; Tyseley’s flagship steam locomotive ‘Clun Castle’ was once again reunited with it’s boiler.

This mega-lift took place in a modern workshop that was funded in part by Birmingham City Council’s Tyseley Property Assistance Programme / European Regional Development Fund. The overhauled 20ton boiler was installed into the frames with exacting detail and precision.

"Although there is still a long way to go, this represents a major milestone in the restoration of Clun Castle." said Alastair Meanley, Workshop and Clun Castle Project Manager. "There are many months of hard work still ahead to complete the overhaul. We plan to start trials later this year and begin mainline operations in the spring of next year."

Keep up the good work guys. When does 5043 come out of traffic? Will the 2x get a chance to be in steam together?

What a wonderful job they do at Tyseley. Only sorry I can't be at the open day. In a few(!) years time, maybe we will see a four castle line up with Thornbury Castle.
