Did the King escape from the demonstration line and pose for photographs on the turntable, around the shed etc?

Good. Just a case of being patient and waiting for an opportune moment to fire the shutter.

4965 and 5043 put a good show on the railtour, they hammered through Kidderminster both times.

I visited Didcot today to see 6023 in steam. What a fantastic sight.

In the 70's I made a couple of visits to Barry. Seeing both 6023 and Galatea in very woeful condition then - with torched wheels - was so sad. I never dreamt that 6023 would steam again. Now looking forward to seeing the other impossible - Galatea - return.

Here's my video of the day's events - 6023, the Coronation Express with 4965 and 5043 (not often THEY play second fiddle!), plus brief shots of 3738 and 5322 also in steam. A very good day.

Nice to meet Mikem today too !

Wish I could have been there today.
What an advert for the preservation movement.......the improbable we can do almost to order, the impossible may take a bit longer but we can do it!!!
Once again congratulations to all those who put in their time and money to make this happen.:clap2: :clap2:

Indeed, from limited evidence of the demo line runs, I think it will be LOUD. As expected 6023 does sound completely different from 6024, in particular the vac pump. Does anyone know if this is a different type to that fitted to 6024 as Spud 1 does have a sound all of its own in that department?

As above fantastic achievement from all at Didcot and great to see so many supporting the event yesterday.

I remember reading somewhere that 6023 and 6024 only ended up at Barry Scrapyard "by accident", having first been sold to one of the other Welsh scrappers, but couldn't get there because of gauging problems.

If that hadn't happened, it would have left only 6000 in preservation.

It's interesting to imagine what kind of grief the NRM might have been getting on here about steaming 6000 in that circumstance......

It was a similar situation with 71000. Was sold to Woodhams but ended up at another S Wales scrapyard by mistake. It was only by somebody noticing a label or tag on the loco saying "sold to Woodhams" or something, that it ended up back at the correct scrapyard. I think that is the correct story. Regarding the 2 Kings, they were sent to S Wales for bridge testing (after being re-united with their tenders at Swindon). A weight restriction prevented them being taken to the scrapyard they were originally sold to after the bridge testing, so they were re-sold to Woodhams. The rest is history.

It was sent, along with 75014, to Cashmores at Newport.

Didn't know about the 75014 part, I thought is was Cashmores, but wasn't sure. I think it was an "anorak" who noticed the incorrect label & informed the scapyard.

Allegedly a local gent, ex-fireman, by the name of Maurice Sheppard, at one time a volunteer at the DFR.

Well a fine job in getting her back to this condition, but I'm sorry to say, and this is going to make me no friends, but going by the photos and videos, the colour does absolutely nothing for me, in fact it looks positively garish... I will now go away and hide and not bring the subject up again...
