Two LNWR carriages now available

I have been approached (via the Bucks Railway Centre, Quainton) by Railcare,
Wolverton who have 2 LNWR coaches they wish to dispose of. No fee has been
mentioned yet and, I suspect, there might not be. The 2 vehicles (both
listed as "secure" on the VCT Carriage Survey) arrived from Crewe a couple
of years ago for restoration for use in a new Museum in Wolverton.

This idea has now collapsed and Railcare wish to see the back of these
coaches as they dont present the right "image" to clients being shown
around the works. I have posted a photo of each in the photo section of railc
and can provide another of each to those interested as well as the contact
details. Make no mistake - they want rid of these and soon and will scrap
them if no takers come forward! Please also note that the 2 coaches are
in need of a lot of work.

The 2 coaches are a LNWR Corridor Composite and a LNWR Ambulance Ward Car.
Incidentally, cold callers at Wolverton are unlikely to gain access.

The ambulance car would tell a very important story in the history of our railways. Is it something the NRM would consider?

 

Is there a LNWR coaching stock association or could one be set up to save them? Yes that sound like I'm volunteering to set one up.

 

Finding a home for them, even if you can raise the transport costs via your new association, might be a problem - I'd suggest looking at one of the newer generation lines that hasn't yet got the "full" signs up - Northampton & Lamport is nearby and would be an appropriate home, perhaps?

 

Do they have undercover storage though? It was just an idea to set up a group to save them.

 

Undercover storage is an impossible deream for most people, but spending about £1200 on good quality overall tarpaulins will conserve the vehicles, and if you look after them should give 15-20 years of protection.

 

So on that basis (and very rough maths):

Tarps: £1200 (each?)
Transport: £3000 +
Plus the cost of purchase: (pass).

 

Yes, but if you can find a new home not too far away your road haulage might be less. Tarps around £600 per coach. Budget £5000 and you should have a little left over for some tools and materials.

 

And thats without buying the vehicles in the first place.

 

The original piece suggested that they might well be given away to anyone who could afforsd to move them at short notice. As I said before though, the biggest problem will be finding a site prpeared to take them. Another long shot might be Chasewater as they've other LNWR stock I think (or used to have). Another possibility might be Ribble Steam Railway, although your transport costs would be a lot higher. No harm in asking, though!

 

Almost as cheap!! to have a fitted tarp cover made (see attachment) which will NOT blow around in the wind and need constant attention.

I'm not exactly flushed with cash which is why I suggested a group of like minded individuals to band together. Before people say it, I'm not a complete dreamer I do accept that I may not be able to get involved in saving them.

 

Crewe HC gave them to Wolverton/MK Museum, so its not as if they owe them anything.

 

Unfortunately the NLR doesn't have the undercover storage. We'd like to build a carriage shed at some point but that's a long way off unless someone provides some funding.

We'd also need to get the funding for the restoration too, but being LNWR they would be nice and apt for the line.....

 

Dave is right, we were talking about the two coaches the other day at the railway. While we would love to have them storage is a big problem and they would be far out of our C & W capabilities at the moment.
