Depends on the condition but like most items of this kind (considered as "boys' toys" by some people, along with Supermarine Spitfires and E-Type Jags) it all depends on the condition. To rebuild a loco such as 6619 from Barry Scrapyard Condition can easily cost £400,000 or less if time is not pressing. So the sale price will depend on whether the locomotive is a "runner" or not. 56xx and 66xx 0-6-2Ts are extremely useful locomotives (in my view) as they are powerful (BR classification 5F I think) with relatively small wheels. Ideal for the jobs they were designed for on Welsh branch lines but also ideal for most heritage railways. 5619 was a great performer whilst at Toddington and I think every GWR heritage line should have a 56/66xx! If 6619 is for sale then I would expect interest to be considerable but, of course, most people aren't exactly flush with money at present!

6619 is operational but I don't think it has too long left on it's nominal boiler ticket.

I think its 'ticket' expires in 2013 towards the latter half of the year.

The only 1 of the 56xx 66xx in BR Black - and I have to say this class of loco looks stunning in this livery :)

Not so sure about the whistle it had on it last time I saw it though - it was like some Yanky hooter thing

Wasn't there a reason why 6619 was withdrawn from service on the NYMR? I seem to recall it being mentioned in one of the mags, but am not sure of the details. It's been a few years since I had a ride behind it (WSR gala, 2008?).

Sad to hear NYMR are parting with 6619, great sound and always a good work horse, possibly the first pocket rocket when you think about it. Not surprised, since the move to whitby it has one less loco on the main run, before then one loco would sit at Grosmont and pick up the next off, so giving the arriving loco an hour to top up with water, coal etc. Now they don't have much time to spare. Hopefully she will find a good home on another heritage railway not to far away.

I don't know where you get tihs idea from, Kenneth. One of the big grumbles of footplate staff is the hanging around at Grosmont that we have due to running to Whitby and having to change locos..

In 2005 (aprox) you would always see a loco sitting at grosmont waiting to pick up the next one in, as such it was ready go and the one arriving would have an hour , while these last few years a loco comes in to grosmont, runs around and back out again. If it needs to get water or more coal its nearly always late off. With the larger loco's they generaly don't need to top up as often as a smaller loco. True for those loco's tthat still don't go straight back out for the whitby, then they will have time and secondly the larger tender's don't need to keep getting topped up.

Whilst we are having a moan about whitby i was looking at the timetable for may the 8th. This is the tail end of a gala and has perhaps more services than normal. to get a steam trip to the seaside from Pickering would be either an early start from home and or a late return home neither of which are particularly appealing to the 'Family' Market.

What the NYMR can do in terms of services to and from Whitby is constrained by the paths available. I don't think here's any way around the early morning start but the NYMR is looking at trying to fit an extra afternoon DMU service (it has to be DMU, to be short enough to allow the service DMU to pull into the platform behind it) as many people use their tickets to return on the Northern Rail train, leading to overcrowding - the NYMR DMU would in effect be a relief train, following once the service train arrives at Glaisdale, clearing the section.

There are more trains from Whitby - but you will need to change at Grosmont as the 10:40 and 14:10 ex Whitby are for Battersby but connect at Grosmont with Pickering trains. The 10:40 will give a longish wait at Grosmont but the 14:10 looks a good connection.

There will be connections into Whitby bound trains too. Changing from one steam train to another at a country junction isn't something that happnes everyday in 21st century Britain!

Depending who buys it, it may not actually leave Grosmont. Who owns it now? Porbably not NYMR themselves, I'd guess.
