earlier it was asked of suggestions of improvement.

one thing Ive often wondered at Rowsley MPD site is the vast amount of trees that are still on site, near the turntable area and to the west of the line.
I think if they were cleared it would make the site a lot more pleasent as it would give views of the hills etc.

I wonder if there is any reason that the site wasnt fully cleared of trees as it was in BR days?
    has this been discussed before?
it is cash or is there any benefit to keeping the trees there, such as winter weather protection?

The wooded areas provide extremely useful event space for the 40s weekend(s), and I feel that their presence, whilst denying us a grand view of the hill, screens us off a bit from our neighbours. Rowsley is quite tidy, but it is after all an industrial development, and having a perimeter of trees and that central island improves the natural appearance of the area. The last thing we want is to become more obtrusive or antagonise residents. What if people felt their own property had been devalued?

I quite like them, though that may just be because I'm used to them. It isn't a bad suggestion, though perhaps not one which will be taken up yet. It would be nice to return the site to it's LMS/BR appearance, but the layout is very different, and it just isn't the same place anymore. One day there will be carriage sheds, a larger station and extensions to the loco depot, so we need all goodwill we can to get such things past planners.

yeah I dont mean on the east side, just the west side where the river and valley is.

take a look at the shot of the 3f on the turntable in the link above to see what I mean.

this is a good shot of Rowsley, just the trees on the right.

it is, on the subject of trees quite a few of them in the middle are if im right elms, it is right that the valley can be a very noisy place, trees do deaden the noise quite a bit, looking at the videos by Pennysteam from the hilltops above the line you can hear this to good effect, you used to be able to hear the factory right across the valley when it was at its most busiest.

similar thing here in my home town, you can always hear the road traffic on the bypass and Ferodo no matter what time of day or night it is and im across the valley from it.

yeah, one of my pet peeves is when you travel by train nowadays the scenery is usually obscured by trees on the embankments that have been let to grow since steam days.
when the Rowsley extension is done and the line hugs the river up to the station, just think itd be nice to have it cleared there between track and river and not a line of trees.

I hope the following is of interest, that I posted to the PresevedRailwayStockList yahoo group:

From reading the message thread it sounds like this tank might be being restored? If so, perhaps the original number could be applied?

    Matlock Station

    Ha, thought that'd grab attention!

Ok, not been near the railway today, but have been to the NNR to collect No4 bench for Matlock, one which I swapped for an original M&GN bench last year. Did look a bit odd dismantling the thing and trying to keep out the way of the BBC film crew working at Sheringham station. Might be a continuity error as the thing slowly vanishes over the course of the programme.

Picked up another LMS gas lamp, almost enough good ones of these to fit out Matlock and Darley Dale now, one more left to collect.

Also went to fetch some more signage for Matlock station, and moved a load of planting for the station from my greenhouse to another closer to the railway.

    Too much to do really.

Anybody want to put in for a running in board?? : )

yup its early because im no longer on fault team, following twenty three years of railway faulting service im now on nights for three weeks, earlies for 9 days in a row, lates for nine days and then week off followed by a week on days, thats whats now called running a national rail network, still it allows more time to be down Peak so im very happy in that respect and the missu gets to see more of me too so bonus all round!!!

might turn into a vampire though before its all done with all this night working!

stay cool, avoid that sun,mad dogs n s&t go out in the midday sun n all!!!!

this week with Pete,Ian,Elliot,John and Scott and Mr Stubley weve planted the cross bench cranks on the timbers Rob kindly put in at Riverside for getting the rodding run from the headshunt across to the box side, weve also bolted the cranks down and started to set the cross rods on too, thus allowing the lds to carry the rodding runs on to the box now, the crank bench alongside the trap has been levelled and sat finally and the french drain rebuilt behind it.

more rod stools have been moved into place for the continued work, and by monday therel be a few more jobs done at Riverside too.

with the rest of the weekend we managed to finish the cream coat off on the box front, marroon to be finished to touch it up,as well as fished more cranks out to go under the hot spanner for the front of the timeber lead off bench for riverside,we also located a load off other bits we need for other jobs and started on these too.

Johns been continuing with insulated block joints and David with painting at Church lane too.

elsewhere the class 50 lads were making good with the weather and getting down to removing the rust in the engine rooms and general bodywork while the weather allows, the lmsca lads were about too and Bens been busy with lampposts and all, recasting bases.

the HST lads were also out and about working on their collection, and there were quite a few others working about round the sites.

more to update on during the week, hope you all didnt get rained out on saturday as we could see some pretty big hammerhead clouds forming out over Yorkshire from Rowsley and they looked stormy!

    take care all.

    Matlock Station

All 6 Midland Railway No.2 platform lamp posts dug out of the grass, needle gunned, primed, undercoated in pink and white ready to take the gloss BR red and cream (with black bottoms) tomorrow and later this week. Thanks Scott Fallon for spending the day undercoating these today.

Ladder bars to sort out next, some are broken/missing, and whilst I have a few I have had to cancel the order for some new ones. Therefore some judicious use of my tiny supply of old ones, some time with a welder and a maybe some fresh bar under some old castings. Lot of time to be spent on these now.

Totem brackets yet to clean up and fix, but missing parts found. Lamp tops have had some attention, and we managed to wire one up with pair of electric lamps. Very pretty, but need to stuff the wire down the gas pipes yet, make a 'production run' SBC mount, polish the brass and copper, gloss the frames, scrub and clean the enamel reflectors, spray the mantle guards, free off the fixing rings, extract the frog screws, assign to a lamp post and reassemble without losing anything. And then do all that another 5 times for Matlock, and 5 times for Darley Dale.

Have managed to acquire an additional pair of lamps recently, one from Diss and another from the former station at Hadlow Road (legally, I might add), and these have been welcome additions to my dwindling stock of lamps, as a few have been cannibalised to complete better examples.

Benches- 2 sets needle gunned and ready for paint. Resurrecting some woodwork I had from a previous bench to form a 5' example. Not been able to buy any timber for the four 10' versions yet, sadly.

That's it really, and that has taken 5 days. Time flies when you're having fun, eh?

    Ben
