The six posts for Matlock are now up to pink undercoat (pending the gloss red) and cream gloss, ladder bars are part dealt with, having removed half of the offending stumps and drilled out ready to tap threads to accept the replacements, (until I run out).

Lamp tops and benches still to do

congratulations, fantastic work, seen a few photos and it looks great.

also seen that the buffet car SC1835 has been repainted into BR maroon, looks brilliant.
it did look a bit faded over recent years and was one of my points I made recentley, be it enthusiast or general public dont want grubby looking carraiges.
    really looks fantastic

We all like shiny gloss paint, so here's some more.

The posts for Matlock have now been glossed twice on all sides. There are 6 ladder bars still to fit, but the holes have been tapped to accept them.

Assembled some totem brackets today, I have some originals but most of this lot is odd side bits I've welded up to form new brackets. Still a piece of angle to add to this, and the band securing to the lamp post, but it's a start. I need a totem to test the fit with...

I'm off for 5 weeks now to attempt to complete my degree. Will complete the totem mounts and crack on with the station benches, lamp tops, poster boards, planters and signage when I get back.

Pete Dave and myself spent the saturday jigging around and fitting out the next crank bench to the rodding in the run at Riverside, Rob and the gang have finished the fitting of the headshunt rodding out, work continueson the straight runs to the box.

Elsewhere Class 50 lads were working,Lmsca lads too and the HST lads had quite a bit of their fleet out the shed on the apron too.Garden and lineside were out n about and the interpretation board bases are popping up nicely around the site.

Asmentioned previously the connection is now in at Riverside to Network Rail, just a little packing and lining to do by hand in coming week or so.

im trying to recall if the tamper isnt one thats been there for a while,we also have our own one too, plus a sleeper changer and other pway on track machines either part of the railways stock or stored for other parties too, would be usefull as you say to have a nice lined formation properly consolidated for the passenger trains.

box is ready for shifting soon as the base gets concreted and a block wall built, the frame supports are straightened and painted up ready to mount it on and to support the locks on,all the rods and cranks are being freed up at Rowsley by Pete

At the moment weve been trying to get work completed around the gang doing the connection so we can keep stuff going on the ground while theyre busy with the connection, now thats done theyre free to get on with the base and the other aspects,an immense help is the gang and the jcb when you want to dig holes in whats amounts to concrete soil, last week we dug a stool in the ground to get a lie of the run ,the first foot and a half was easy, very dry like dry cement mix and fell apart easily, the last 6 inches was a nightmare, solid ,probably with run off from the quarry over the years and the old sidings too.

What's the operating plan for Matlock Station? Will there be a shunter to release the stock or will it push back to run round at Riverside (Whitby style)?

when the tracklaying at Matlock station is being laid.

can the workers lay the track while East Midland trains are running or have they got to have possesion?

I would think they could lay sleepers one by one while trains are still running but it may not be allowed.

and is the track for this job at Rowsley now? ie track panels or rails and sleepers or will it come from Network rail by train?

any tracklaying on/adjacent to NR has to be protected, thats the way we work nowadays, dont want stray sleepers to foul an operational runningline, but you can have a plastic rigid barrier fence to allow contractors/etc to work behind while trains still run, remember the train speed into matlock is 15mph due to the terminating nature of the services and sighting etc of the station,so its low speed on adjoining lines.

thus with rigid fence you could continue to work alongside east midlands trains.

i remember whebn the west coast work was on there was a rigid barrier over a bridge at handforth with a space of around 4 feet to the open running line with trains at full linespeed,

not sure about trackwork, ive very little knowledge of track panels, chair types etc being a humble s and t man!!! but i believe the trackwork is being looked at as is the platform works as well,so theres an ongoing work bank for everyone to keep going.

    thanks,

would that mean as well as men, machinery such as rail cranes and jcb's can be used alongside too?

worksites are regularly set up alongside operational running lines with machinery operating to the fenceline, the difference is if the safety of the line would be impinged upon by said crane etcetera,in that case youd need to take a full line possession as you dont want a stray lift swinging sideways into the path of a train, that said contractors do regularly shift waste rail by hiab lineside without a full possession,it all depends on the lift, the plan, the risks and how its been planned.

thats how we do it at work, regarding Matlock, any lifting would be in the remit of the contractor doing the work etc,how they plan to acheive that and what machinery they wish or require to do the task, you can operate a mini/large digger on the platform without impinging the operational running line, say for digging it out, lifting edging blocks etc, track laying would be in the contractors remit id say, they may wish to road rail panels into place, that would then come under a possession if they used the running line etc,but thats there remit to decide on how its to be done safely.

if you look at the other side of the proverbial coin, bridges are nowadays slid into place quite happily with traffic, public flowing beneath them, depends on whats planned boss!!
