Excellent day out over "enemy territory" ;) and a nice way to clear my favourite steam loco for 1,000 miles haulage.

Only a couple of phots from the trip:

    at York

    King's Cross on the stops

    Broadside view at King's Cross

Shame about the late arrival back, down to the perils of loosing you path on the modern railway - nothing to do with the loco.

As far as I know watering supply problem contributed to the delay and hence missing the path , sopmething to do with having to use a hosepipe normally used to fill carriage tanks up, Rather than the usual standpipe or tanker.....

Well, it looked like they were using one of the normal tankers in Peterborough Yard to me, either way - it's not really the loco's fault! We were only a few minutes late leaving the yard, certainly no more than five, but it must have been enough to work against us.

I'm intrigued to know whereabouts Gamston Bank is, and is there a decent trackside view? I guess there is from what you have said 4472.

Those small bore hosepipes would need many hours to refill a main line loco's tender hence the normal use of fire hoses or similar. Once a loco is stabled on shed then such a hosepipe is ideal to refill overnight for instance.

about 1/2 mile south of Retford you will find Gamston curve with a 1:178 climb to the summit inside Askham tunnel. You can see Gamston curve from my shot taken last December A4 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley with The Tynesider.

Thanks for the info - I've had a look on Google Earth & think I know now where you mean. I'll have to have a look there next time I go to Retford.

Are you aware of the trackside footpath at East Markham? It's not much good for northbound but not bad for south bound as the train comes off the over bridge at Church St?
The path is immediately adjacent to the trackside fence and is completely clear of bushes etc. Main draw back is that it's fairly level so they are essentially just cruising.

    Thanks again

At the right time of day especially when the sun goes into the west, I find that Gamston bank photographed from across the fields with a long lense, anything going south makes for a good broadside. Here are two of my efforts from Saturday evening. ... Wardy.

Yes that is the location from where I took my shot of 6201. Sometimes they do shut off here after the climb but last Saturday the crew on 6201 did not and with the soft evening light the exhuast was caught in superb light. I prefer to just stand on the wire fence to get a low down shot rather than walk up the footpath and get a more level 3/4 shot.As you say anything northbound does not work here but you could use the footpath just off the A57 trunk road a nice view before going into Askham tunnel. Hope this helps.

Didn't know about the A57 footpath will have to have a recce. Thanks

On the occasions I've been to E Markham they've, as I say, been coasting.

I caught it on the return trip at Balby Xing at Balderton. I also saw it there on the Northbound run. On both occasions the camera shutter seized
up so I had very little success. Been out & bought a new one so it'll have it's 1st outing later this week for 6201 again.

I don't have, at the moment, a worthwhile long lens. I have a 500mm Tamron but only a Pentax mount for it, and I'm using Nikon now. Seems that Tamron
no longer make the adaptall mounts.

Try the second-hand shops, or ebay. Adaptall mounts do come up from time to time.

    Thanks

I've been keeping any eye on Ebay & missed a couple. There are usually several advertised for sale at prices that are lower than they seem to go for
at auction. Makes me suspect that they're from Hong Kong etc and doubtful about whether they can be trusted. Tried London (or City) Camera Exchange
in town - none available recently.
