Here's a screen shot from my video, showing Clan Line in the sun at Albury.

Video will be up in a short while.

By the way, anyone here know why they vary her nameplates? I see she wore her red ones in December and January, but this month she is carrying her black ones. Just curious.....

My video is now up. Two new locations for me, both foot crossings, the first just after Virginia Water station, the second is Blackheath Lane at Albury.

Investigated this location, but as it is inside the crossing gate decided that this location is trespassing and just not worth it.

Instead, took the following picture from the Bridge near Abinger Hammer - she looked a fine sight.

As far as I'm concerned, both locations were trespassing on the mainline. That is probably why the diesel sounded its horn at Virginia Water as it passed.

Pleased with myself? The future of steam on the mainline could be dependent on people staying the right side of the fence. NO photograph is worth it. Its not a question of being pleased with myself, but it is a question of staying within the law while we are photographing.

Given the discussion on the East Midlander thread regarding the legality (or otherwise) of crossings I have to express a little discomfort with the Virginia Water shot and also the second scene with people standing effectively trackside i.e no fence between them and the rails

Which side of the gate were you? I visited the Albury location this morning and know that it is taken from INSIDE the gate and therefore is trespassing on the mainline. It is just not worth it from a safety point of view, and from a legal stance as well.

I think I was obeying the sign:

I don't agree with your view, you don't agree with mine. Shall we settle on that?

When crossing the railway line, Stop Look and Listen, and then cross quickly. No where does it say you can stop on the edge of the crossing and take photos of the passing trains. You can only gain access to the lineside in this case, if you intend to cross the line quickly from one side to the other.

I do not wish this thread to turn into any form of witch hunt regarding the locations . We have two points of view . I do go back to the EM thread where video was taken from just back from a crossing . The train was held up because of people on the trackside . The individual concerned has since take the offending video down . I'm not sure they haven't canned their youtube membership .

Hmmm, they must have missed that bit off this particular sign. Or my camera missed it.

Nowhere does it say you can't. One oft quoted difference between the English and the French is that, in England, if it's not explicitly forbidden, then it's permitted. But in France, if it's not explicitly permitted, it's forbidden. Are you French?

Oh. Quickly. Would that be 3mph, 10mph, 60mph. Please enlighten us on your interpretation (and maybe also enlighten us on where the quotation comes from, and what makes your interpretation of it more valid than mine)

Plus, as I already said, we disagree. Fine. Do you really want to continue this?

In view of the stance universally, (and correctly IMHO), taken here on Nat Pres about taking photos etc from the wrong side of the railway fence, wouldn't it make sense Steve, if you asked the mods to remove the footage and the subsequent quotes based on it?

I'm not sure it does anyone, especially Nat Pres, any good in showing what seem at very best some marginal locations. Especially the first sequence where the approach shot and the going away shot do show where the crossing fence is, and how close the cameraman was to the other running line.

Only a suggestion Steve. But hopefully you will think through the need to do it, and think about whether it makes sense to avoid using those locations again.

    Cheers,

    Bryan

I am not going to continue this discussion, but its not a question whether I'm right or not, it's the law. It is trespassing to photograph on crossing - it is illegal and setting a bad example. Perhaps you should contact your local British Transport Police if you are that confident with your interpretation.

Firstly, I don't do photography, secondly,......where does it say that? (the highlighted bit). I'm not trying to advance the discussion, I just don't know if it's a set down, black and white fact, that it's illegal. Trespassing on the railway is wrong and it's an offence, but a crossing? :confused1:

But how do you know that the driver was not responding to a family waving at the passing train? I'm not trying to support any side in this argument but assuming that something probably happened is not valid. <BJ>

If it's a foot crossing there will be whistle boards either side of it.

We're discussing the sound of the horn from the diesel at the back of the train. <BJ>
