The NBL group have decided to make a last minute bid for one of these locos:

You may already be aware that AMCOAL are auctioning off six South African steam locomotives tomorrow at
Greenside Colliery and Landau Rapid Load Coal Terminal. The attached documents refer.

Due to growing interest from our members, we have decided to mount a last minute bid to purchase ex NGR /
NBL Class 1A 4-8-0 No. 1301 which is stored at Greenside Colliery. It was built in Glasgow in 1909 works
number 19063.

This is an original Hendrie locomotive, almost 100 years old and in virtually complete condition, it last steamed in 1999.
We arwe very grateful that our Members have already supported numerous NBLPG projects but this historic engine is far
too good to go for scrap and we would like to ask if you can bear with us one more time to save No. 1301.

If David Hendrie, who did most of the design work on the famous H.R. 'Jones Goods' had not gone to South Africa, his
Class 1's could well have been running on the Highland Railway. The logical development would have been 15F's and
25NC's running on BR as many subequent SAR designs evolved from Hendries original thinking !

Please let us know as soon as possible if you can help. Just R80,000 (£4,700) should save the engine from scrap and
we will need about the same again to move it to a secure preservation site for storage.

ANGLO STEAM LOCO AUCTIONS

During October, a South African Auction House, Park Village Auctions, announced that they were selling some surplus mining equipment for Anglo American Coal in the Witbank area. This included no less than 6 British-built steam locomotives - four of them from NBL.
Some of the locos had been offered to SANRASM in the 1990’s, but with subsequent changes in mine ownership, the current Management decided to put them up for Auction.

Historically the most important was a Hendrie Natal Government Railways Class 1A 4-8-0 No. 1301 which was stored at Greenside Colliery along with two British 14R Class 4-8-2’s.
The loco had been built by NBL in 1909 (works number 19063) and was still in virtually original condition. As we did not want to get into a bidding contest with the local South African preservation groups, we checked round with them first and to our surprise we found that only scrap dealers would be bidding for any of the engines !

There was no way we were going to let No. 1301 go for scrap and, following a last minute appeal for funds, we were able to enter a bid for the loco which we felt would be sufficient to carry the day. However, when I telephoned Park Village Auctions on the morning of the Auction, to check that our bid had been entered, they told me that all the engines at Greenside Colliery had been withdrawn at the last minute, pending possible preservation.

Fortunately our Chairman, Nick Newport is in South Africa at the moment and he arranged a meeting with the Greenside Colliery Management to inspect No. 1301 and express our view that the loco was historically too important to go for scrap. This has now been agreed by the Mine but at the time of writing no decision has been made regarding where the locos are to be preserved. It seems that the other locos in the Auction, (seen stored at Landau Rapid Load Coal Terminal in the picture below) a Rhodesian Railways Garratt, a 12A and a 3BR, were not so fortunate. Many thanks to everyone who expressed their support for saving No. 1301 and thanks also to Robin Jones of Heritage Railway for covering this story on our behalf. We are awaiting news from Greenside Colliery about the future of their Hendrie Class 1A 4-8-0 No. 1301. Sources indicate that the Mine are about to decide between SANRASM and ourselves regarding the preservation of this fine locomotive. A preservation plan has been prepared so we are ready to move if (hopefully) the decision goes in our favour.

MORE NBL / SA STEAM UP FOR SALE
After last month’s surprise news that the steam locos at Greenside and Landau were being
Auctioned, we have been contacted by Harmony Mines, who are inviting bids for three of
their ex NBL / SAR 16CR Pacifics which are currently stored at St. Helena Gold Mine near
Welkom in the Orange Free State. Two of the locos, ex SAR 839 and 819 are shown below.
NBLPG will not be bidding on any of these engines though, as they are in poor condition and
have been rebuilt with SAR standard boilers. Nevertheless, they are historically important
and we’ll be happy to pass on the tender documents to any interested parties.

HISTORIC DUBS TANK SET TO RETURN TO UK

Thanks to a generous offer from the Bulk Gear Shipping Line, to carry the loco at a greatly reduced rate as deck cargo from Richards Bay to Portbury Docks, Bristol, an historic 109 years old Dubs ‘A’ Class Tank locomotive looks set to return from South Africa to the UK this summer. However, £15,000 is needed to cover final repainting, container movement of track and other materials and road transport costs at either end of the journey.

Members of the Mizens Railway, near Woking are working hard to prepare No. 196’s future home and have agreed to start preparation of the site for a loco shed and lay 60 yards of track for the engine to be displayed on. The Mizens Railway itself has kick started the project with a donation of £2,000 to the Shipping Fund and the loco’s owners, the NBL Preservation Group have launched an appeal to raise the balance of £13,000 by the target shipping date of August 2009.

100 of the ‘A’ Class Tanks were built at Dubs’ Glasgow Locomotive Works for the Natal Government Railway between 1888 and 1900 and they were the first engines in the World to utilise the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement. Their great success paved the way for many larger and more powerful locomotives using the ‘Mountain’ configuration.

The NBLPG locomotive started life as NGR No. 133 in 1899, became South African Railways No. 196 in 1910 and spent the last 20 years of her working life in industrial service, before being donated to NBLPG for preservation by AMCOAL’s Springfield Colliery. She was subsequently moved to Masons Mill for cosmetic restoration and secure storage whilst funds are raised for shipping home.

NBLPG Secretary, Ken Livermore said that this is a very important project to us as, although Dubs built more than 4,000 steam locomotives in Glasgow before becoming part of NBL in 1903, only 2 of their engines are preserved on the UK Mainland. We are very grateful to AMCOAL (now ANGLO Coal) for releasing the loco to us for preservation.

Mike Smith, Chairman of the Mizens Railway and a keen NBLPG supporter added that the project would enhance the Mizens efforts to expand their existing railway attractions on their site and would help to cement Woking’s long term status as a railway town. What scope or enthusiasm is there in the UK to have a SAR 3ft gauge line/centre ? I appreciate a 25nc running may be impractical but some of the smaller engines would be a fantastic sight and different from anything else

Mizens was the name of the farm where the railway was previously. The farm site was bought by Mclarens who paid for the relocation and built their new HQ on the old site.
