I seem to remember from years ago watching trains o past Springs Branch (Wigan) from the publicly accessible area opposite the depot, there was the partially buried remnants of a well rusted loco boiler barrel, though the whole area may well be somewhat overgrown by now- its a long time since I've been down there- hence why I really can't remember what it may be!

AIUI there isn't really such a thing as a 57xx boiler as oppposed to a Dean Goods boiler (other than the superheated ones). They were used on a good few other classes: as well as the various 57xx predecessors there were 3521 0-4-2T/0-4-4T/4-4-0s, Stella Class 2-4-0s and various absorbed engines. The design changed enormously over the years, from round top firebox to Belpaire, top feed, superheating, increases in pressure, all sorts of differences in tube arrangements and so on. It would be somewhat anorakish but possibly interesting to know how many variants have survived... certainly a P class boiler as fitted to the Dean Goods when it embarassed the Ivatt 2-6-0 in the BR trials would be a very different animal indeed to that fitted to a new Dean Goods in the previous century: a 1930s design with, presumably, much improved steaming capacity..
