Sadly one turntable not featuring in this thread is the 1958-built 70 footer at Perth. It was accidentally cut up for scrap in October 2008 having just been gifted by NR to Boness. I found out just as I was waiting for my flight to Edinburgh so paid a site visit the next day and took some photos of the remains. One or two of them were published in Steam Railway.

Can anyone tell me how long the turntable is at Barrow Hill? I think that it's only 50 or 55' and that big locos have to be split from their tenders but no-one seems to want to say publicly. The Barrow Hill website didn't say last time I looked.

There's a lot of mis-information about 'table lengths (this being quite an important point). The use of outriggers on the Torbay and Dartmouth line's 'table at Churston is a great way to get around this problem.

We could have a whole new thread on where we would put turntables on NR if we could. Fishguard, Penzance (instead of St Blazey), Weymouth (instead of Yeovil Junction), Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Machynlleth, Merthyr Tydfil.....

I reckon it's a 55 footer. I came to this conclusion as a 37 just fits on with the body slightly overhanging (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0boqx_7bt0) & according to wiki a 37 is 50ft8in wheelbase & overall length of 61ft6in.

Also the same way that D6319? was cut up at Swindon AFTER it was bought for preservation. Although D821 was saved instead, it means we have no NBL design diesel in preservation after D601 & D6121 or 2 were cut up at Barry despite attempts to save them.

I believe Barrow Hill also had some method of turning overlength locos. I read somewhere that in the past the end wheels on Peaks were jacked up so there wasn't a problem. I assume this has also occurred in preservation as 45105 has moved on and off the turntable roads in the past, but I've not witnessed this.

OK, a misunderstanding. I was only thinking of NBL main line diesels. I assume those 2 are shunters.
