    Hi All,

New member after doing a bit of lurking. I basically came across this forum whilst looking for the wherabouts of one of Penrhyn Quarry engine's, namely "Marchlyn". I was excited to find a post talking about Marchlyn's location in a theme park in the US and even more after seeing a link to a satellite map showing a possible sighting of the little engine.

I've done some further research and found that the link does not appear to be "Marchlyn" and now hoping somoeone else has a picture of her as she sits today please?

The post that I followed was:
    http://railways.national-preservation.com/archive/index.php/t-18173.html

    On there "Tonyw" states:
"Appears just to the right of centre of this image, in the trees directly below the large round building with a brown roof:
    http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v...&scene=13023996&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1"

I've managed to find a Youtube video of the modern train ride through this park and at about 1.50 minute onwards it does show a green object, but appears to be some sort of water tank unless I am hugely mistaken, the landmarks appear the same:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWkdD_8XGUs

So back to square one. Any information on this quarry class would really make me happy.

    Cheers
    Nige

    Greetings and welcome,

The earlier thread discussed the location and a few years ago now there was a picture of her sitting on a length of track in the amusement park, this was on the PQR website, however it is no longer there as best I know. I know there are some Penrhyn guys on here so they may be able to shed some light on the photo whereabouts.

I, amongst many others it seemed from the last thread, had emailed the park asking if they had the loco and what plans, if any they had for her.

They did email back, but I got the impression from the tone of the email that they get quite a few questions about her.

They confirmed that she was indeed there and that they had no plans to restore her for use or otherwise and that they did not have any photo's of her.

They also added that she was definately not for sale (even though this question was not in my original email)

The photo that was on the PQR website seemed to indicate that she was in pretty good condition, looking like not much had been done since she left these shores.

I think she is a fantastic looking engine and would love to see her (or her sister for that matter!) back in the UK, maybe one day I guess! !

    Fingers crossed!

    R.

It does annoy one that these folk buy an engine, do nothing with it except allow it to sit outside and deteriorate, and then refuse to consider selling it to someone who wants to restore it and let it run again.
Either they should restore these locos, or if they just want a sculpture, make one out of plywood! :)

I concur that what I thought was Marchlyn is not the loco. However, I think I have found her hidden in the trees and "at the back of the amphitheatre" as mentioned in one of the other links that I posted. She is only visible in one direction in Bing birds-eye-view maps, and I couldn't work out how to do an accurate link so take a look at this instead:
    http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff340/TonyW590/Marchlyn.jpg
The red circle marks what I believe to be Marchlyn, and it certainly ties up with the background of the photo that used to be on the PQR web site.

Can be seen (briefly, and only as a shadowy outline) at 2:24 on the YouTube video referred to above.

Not quite as simple as that is it?

    You will need to:
Negotiate with the amusement park (and just in case you didn't read all the links above, the park have said she is NOT for sale)
Arrange transport and shipping back to the UK
    Arrange a home railway
Find suitable engineering facilities (assuming you wish her to run again)
Set up a society/trust to look after the loco (and get others to join to assist with the various areas of work)
Raise a lot of money to cover all the above items

I do hope you're not just expecting others to sort out all these things-if you want to see her back then start emailing/phoning!

    Good luck!

    Keith

I tried this about 10 years ago on behalf of a group of friends of mine. We offered what we thought to be *serious* money (five figure sum in pounds, first digit 4 - far more than Marchlyn is actually worth) but the answer was always "No", even when the first digit got within a whisker of 5. However, I suspect if you went there with $1million cash in your pocket they might talk to you as everything has a price.

Cheers Tony. Had a look at your recent image and it appears quite positive.

Sorry to blow the earlier spotting. If anything, it shows the determination to see her

This is the most recent picture I have managed to find:

    marchlynhl2.jpg

and from the following website - http://chasewaterstuff.wordpress.com/2010/12/10/news-about-talon-and-marchlyn/

In December 2010 it seems Chasewater railway have sent information about the little engine to the amusement park who currently own her ... I wonder why?

Their own museum?? Information gathering for selecting appropriate asking price when selling maybe?

Anybody in the background heard anything new about Marchlyn?

    Marchlyn returns

Peter Johnson reports that Marchlyn (Avonside 2067/1933) has returned from the USA and has been delivered to the Statfold Barn Railway. Picture is here

Adds a little extra interest to the idea of a Penrhyn loco gathering!

    Hope this is of interest
