This weekend its the DMU, as the runround loop although physically complete has not been commisioned/signed off for use yet. Therefore 33021 will again be used with 5199 in Top and Tail on Saturday.

Can anyone answer this question. If I stand in Froghall station facing north to do a line walk checking the up rail on my right hand side, with the line to Cauldon being being horseshoe shaped, reaching Cauldon facing south where is the up rail?. Did it change or is it still on my right hand side, if it changed where did it change, I don't like writing down jobs to do on the right hand side, not very professional is it,although I'm only a volunteer.

Up and down lines were often (But not always) defined by whether they went to or from the Capital (eventually!). However I thought that all the lines there were single track?

Usually mile posts are positioned on the up side of the line.

Not sure that you can have an 'up rail'! In terms of direction, up and down are generally determined from MP 0 so it is 'up towards MP 0. Up is traditionally the way towards London (when the line was built) and mileposts usully reflect this. I don't know of any exceptions but someone on here will.

In the end, how you describe it is really irrelevant as long as it is unambiguous and those concerend can easily understand it.

Thanks for that it makes sense, when the passenger trains went from Leek to Waterhouses the old triangle was in place so the up line would be on the right from Waterhouses to Leek.

Midland Railway at Butterley is one instance of being "wrong way round" with the mileposts mileage being measured from London, but it is down line to London.

You could be like some ring roads that identify the parts as inner and outer. So you have the inner rail and the outer rail.

I would say the (first to be lifted) Leek-Cauldon leg of the triangle would be the only leg where you would swap from up to down if you traversed it. A Froghall-Cauldon working would be a down train all the way judging by the numbering of the mileposts...?

As I'd hoped, I visited the Churnet Valley/MCR at the weekend, and had a superb time.

We were staying with friends about 8 miles away, and I saw from the CVR website that Saturday was one of the occasions when they were running steam up the Cauldon Low MCR extension, with 5199 doing the honours. So I got my persuasion skills brushed up, and we ended up going there for the Saturday morning trip from Froghall.

I think it was the best heritage line ride I have done! 5199 looked and sounded excellent, the first class coach that we rode in was immaculate, its refurbishment must have been very recently completed. The ride through the valley up to Cheddleton is lovely, and then the climb from there up to Cauldon low is awesome! We were right behind the engine, and 5199 worked its socks off up the hill, making a splendid noise with 5 coaches in tow.

I was very pleased too to see that the train was absolutely packed.

Well done to everyone involved with the two railways there, great job.

    I highly recommend a visit!

Same here, got caught out in the thunder/hail storm, got soaked before we made it to Leek Brook signal box, fortunately had the key to the lower door. Went to Chedd for snapin and when we went back to Leek Brook it started again, but we managed to do the jobs in the end. Wet but happy.
