The July edition of 'Ships Monthly' carries the story of a fullly booked cruise on Olsens 'Balmoral' (chartered by British operator Miles Morgan) to mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic tragedy. Leaving Southampton on 8th April, the ship calls at Cobh then heads for the geographical position of the sinking where she will remain on the 14th/15th April. The ship then continues to Halifax (where many of the unclaimed victims are buried) and then to New York.

Interest in this 'cruise' has been so strong that a second ship has been chartered to run a similar excursion from New York.

Not sure what to think - fitting tribute or profiteering from the macabre?

Thank Goodness I have visited all the Titanic locations on journeys with their own poignancy and without the ghoulish factor - The locations have much to offer besides the Titanic links

NYC - nuff said - and Ellis Island home of the Annie Moore arrival statue
Halifax - The maritime museum and pier 21
Cobh - a lovely unspoilt Irish village - with two tragedy memorials almost adjacent to each other - Titanic and Lusitania - and home of the Annie Moore embarkation statue
Southampton - First and last port
Belfast - always worth a visit to see how the province is coming back from "The Troubles" especially if the RPSI are running
