We have been having problems with line side members not sending in updates.
Instead, they are more then happy to receive updates.

So I have taken the step to pay members for the updates they send in.

There is a part of RailTour-Live under Development, this enables members to 'buy' a rail tour.

This will give that member access to that rail tour, to send in updates and depending on how many members are subscribed, how much you are paid.

There will be a minimum of 10 updates that will need to be sent in, but this depends on the length of tour etc.
As the system is under development, please contact me by PM if your interested.

It will cost you nothing to register to the system, nothing to buy a tour, and you will be paid for the sending in updates.

You will have two choices on where you want the money to go to, either to add funds to your account, so you can receive updates from another tour, or direct into your bank account.

    Cheers
    Glyn Murray

I forgot to mention, you can also ask us to donate the payment to a railway or charity of your choice.

The idea of railtour-live is an interesting one, a kind of enthusiasts TRUST system but will people really send in, a minimum, of 10 updates when they're out for a day with friends or family? Seems unlikely to me. I rarely do more than 1 or 2 railtours a year and I don't think I would be texting in 10 times during the trip.

It's an option open to people . What works well is one person on each train who is happy to send in updates , perhaps following the UK Steam info timing points . What admin is offering is that if you are willing to do this then you get some cash back either for yourself or for a loco of your choice .

I know that Martin, I did read it, I'm just not sure that it'll work - it obviously hasn't in its previous form.

Not directing this at you Neil, just a general comment, it will only work if people are willing to make it work, apathy never makes anything happen.

In it's previous form, it worked to en extent, however what I am trying to do is add a reliability to the system. Now if your going to get updates, but when.
I am also thinking about putting a cap of spend per user. Any messages received after the cap will be free.

One of our worries when we were testing the system and discussing possible problems with the system was that too many texts may come in from different sources from one location with the same info. It seems our concerns didn't materialise!

I have been on a couple of tours since the system was set up and you tend to send in updates when passing well known locations such as major stations etc. I usually send the first when we depart the starting station, eg, a simple text saying Crewe 9.15, Wigan 10.05, Lancaster 10.30 and so on. If we are delayed or running early I would include what info I may have from the train crew for the delay/early running in the text. I think it came in very useful for linesiders during last years York Yuletide and the watering problems at Hellifield with 6201 earlier this year.

    Neil.

And this is why we want one person per tour on the train sending updates . No one else needs to . Just subscribe in the knowledge that you will receive regular updates . One off tours work well as you can be comfortable that someone will be on and willing to do it . The repeat trips are the bigger challenge .

  10. Why use this when you have Realtime access to the whole UK network via Realtime Trains. Its available on mobiles and is up to speed with all services not just steam charters. Useful also to look if you're at a station and want to see if anything else is due to prevent being bowled.

The point about this service is that it's SMS and available on any mobile phone, not just smart-phones. No internet connection needed, nor 3G coverage. Whether there are enough people for whom that's still important to provide enough information to make the service viable is a moot point.

And of course it was introduced long before the data. used by services like realtime. was available.
Also you are lucky to get the mobile signal required, ie 3G, at places like Ais Gill and other remote but popular vantage points.
