    Times now on UKSteam. Now I know that times initially shown by RTC were provisional, but 7.50 off Lime Street has now become 6.39 with a return changed from 9pm to 22.25.
    2 hours to get from Lime Street to Man Vic including 50 mins looped at Eccles. Are the planners at Network Rail having a laugh ??

    The plan to take the grandkids on this doesn't seem so appealing now.

    Again - another reason why SLOA C21 should be initiated - NR planners simply regard this market as Crankex's, whereas they are actually more in the nature of family and dining days out - and 06.39 to 22.25 station to station which really means 05.00 to 00.00 real time away from home, and all day car commute parking because there is no public transport connection at that time, is just not attractive - to anyone!

    Murder - mystery - not in my book - I know exactly who's head I would be after!

    I think and hope part of the 50 minutes at Eccles can be put down to a water stop...

    On the outward journey the Eccles water stop is fifty minutes and there is fifteen minutes at Victoria. On the return the Victoria stop is instanaeous and the Eccles water stop is thirty minutes Ralph - speaks volumes for NR timers!

    Looks like there's an easy half hour could be shaved with an intelligent discussion somewhere - giving an 07.10 departure potential

    Agreed, there is still enough time to get it changed and warn passengers of a revised departure.
    I wonder about the diesel, as the train was booked for a 6/7P, will a 5 be able to get it out of Lime Street and up Miles Platting from dead stands unassisted, or will the load be reduced?

    There's entirely another question - in the real days a load for a five would probably have been max 10 or so - what was on 1T57??? and there were always bankers at Vic

    I travelled on the Bowring trip in 2007, Lime St to Hebden Bridge. 45407 took load 10 out of Lime St and Miles Platting bank unassisted but as far as I am aware 10 is the max for a class 5 loco.

    Well I remember travelling from Liverpool to Halifax in the late fifties as a lad and the customary 5 was taken off at Victoria with a hot box. The station pilot was substituted which was a Fairburn 2-6-4 tank. It had twelve on and absolutely shot up Miles Platting and went like greased lightning all the way..............to say I was gobsmacked (I don't think that word existed then) is an understatement. When I got off I spoke with the crew who just grinned at me........

    don't forget 45407 got out of Bradford Exchange a few years ago unassisted which is quite a climb and best of all it made it up and round the Greetland curve which is heavily lubricated for flange wear on the same day.......this used to be banked on many occasion in steam days.......

    Yes I was on that, it's fair to say that another passenger would have probably been the one too many, as 5407 certainly was at the limit on that occasion.

    It certainly was, and as for the Greetland attempt my heart was in my mouth when it began to slip near the top........but it was caught and soldiered on.....

    I was just behind the engine and filmed the whole of the climb with my Sony Camcorder with fingers crossed all the way. Some bloke can be hear clearly shouting out "you'll never make it" and for a while thought he was probably right. But slowly, very slowly, the Black 5 dug in and got us over the top. But it had been a close run thing. I spoke with the driver at the first opportunity and he said the regulator was wide open, the cut off set for maximum power and according to him "there was no more that the loco could give".

    I hope to post this on You Tube soon when a friend Steve shows me how to do it. It really is spectacular footage on a very sunny day.

    I watched that. At one stage I did think it was going to be too much, but they stuck at it and relief all round when the loco made it. I think the loco was on the hill while the train was still in the platform.
