43924 has returned to steam on the KWVR. The KWVR website states that it is expected to be in service in about a month. Pictures have been posted on the KWVR website of her test run: http://kwvr.co.uk/news/latest.html

She looks fantastic. Can't wait to get a ride behind her at the Worth Valley.

Excellent. How many other Midland engines are there in steam at present? None I suspect.

Out of interest, has the KWVR had a new set of rods made for this engine? I thought I recall that the rods were cut at Barry and had been welded together, but were no longer considered useable?

Correct. It was the first loco out of Barry and the first one restored (1970), followed by 4588 and 5322 in 1971.

I think 4588 "cheated" slightly. I believe it was restored in Swindon Works. Likewise I believe (4)5690 was restored in Derby Works.

Does anyone know whether a new copper or steel inner firebox has been fitted? Whilst the Derby 4 was in bits, I read in Push & Pull that a steel replacement was being considered as the copper 'box was considered life expired. I also read that the frames were being straightened to correct a long-standing misalignment sustained in accident damage during its working life.

It's great to see this machine back in steam anyway - Last time I saw it it was pretty "tired", and being given a real thraping too, there was plenty of knocking from the motion.

    Richard.

    Great video Mark.

Loco is right-hand drive, was that usual for Midland locos?

Yes IIRC. It was the later LMS built ones which were LHD.

News to me, I never saw any welding on the rods in the early 70's and I'm not aware of ever having read this in Push n Pull, or heard of it via the lads in the yard either, but I stand to be corrected!

The batch of LMS 4Fs built for use on the S & D, nos 4557-4561, were built with RH drive. Photographic evidence shows that some other members of the Class were RH drive as well.

Would anyone from the K&WVR be able to shed any news of running dates for the 4F before the October Gala??
