I got the Haynes manual from Waterstones online when it was released. It is rather good and goes into a lot of detail about the loco's construction. Also has sections on the testing process and the first couple of years of operation as well as a chapter on the Original A1's. For those a bit short of cash it might be worth waiting a little while as it may get reduced in price. This happened with the Titanic Haynes manual which I got at a reduced price in Waterstones in Lincoln (I needed something to read on the infamous 13th April 34067 charter!)

Whilst I was waiting for Ollie to come through Iver on Saturday morning, I was chatting to a guy who does work for EMT about Tornado (hoping that she would appear - which she did), during the conversation he mentioned that Tornado is no longer based at Hither Green, possibly something to do with either a clash of ego's or a difference of opinion on stabling costs.

Does anyone on here know if this is true or not, as that afternoon at Carpenders Park I was chatting to a chap who turned out to be a convenator and he knew nothing about it!

So if this is the case, just where is she now going to be based, or is she nomadic?

Dont know that tornado ever had a 'home' to speak of. Hither green being well placed for the amount of work from London that she does...

I had always assumed she was nomadic, stabled wherever it was easiest for the next tour of duty. For the record, I'm a covenator too, and no, I wasn't aware of any change there either. But that sort of thing isn't normally related to covenators via the usual channels of communication in any event.

I hope - for purely selfish reasons - that it's not true, as I have enjoyed the occasional jaunt up to Hither Green from Sidcup to catch a glimpse of her in the yard from a safe, and non trespassing location.

Well she certainly needs a London base for a lot of the time & if she no longer has the use of Hither Green, where could she go, Southall would be Ideal, but we all know that aint going to happen, would she share Stewarts Lane with Clan Line? Thats about it for London.

As I said earlier I have no idea if this is true or not and was hoping to seek clarification.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt Hither green DBS territory? and they run Tornado under their safety case - seems a bit odd to me.

I can assure you that there is no truth whatsoever in that information, there is no problem going to Hither Green, it's just that it is difficult to access as Lewisham platforms are out of bounds going towards the depot, so it means she has to go via Dartford everytime.
So far she have not been required in London, if and when she is, either Southall or Stewarts Lane will be used.

Thanks for the confirmation although would WCRC let them use Southall after that business with the repairs. Stewarts Lane is quite a good choice I'd thought as its where 35028 (another DB Schenker only loco) is based and ideal for trips out of Victoria. But Southall would still be an ideal place and she'd be surrounded by fellow steam locos and WCRC have a good operations base there.

Having completed a successful trip with Pathfinder to Canterbury, 60163 then moved "engine & van" to Bishops Lydeard, here's a YouTube clip from Melksham which raises an interesting question:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-LfiM5BOZI

What is the second coach? Is Tornado's support crew now so large that they need a second vehicle, is it for all the sales staff and their inventory or is this the much whispered about "pole-dancing car"? Inquiring minds need to know! :eyebrows:

I really don't know why this myth that Clan Line is "DB Schenker only" persists. It's true that her normal work on the VSOE are worked by DBS, as were her recent charters for UK Railtours. However, other jobs crewed by WCRC do occassionally come up, such as last December's double-headed trip around Kent with one of the black fives, and there's no problem when they do.

Brunswick green (love it or hate it!) has to be easier to keep looking good simply because it's darker.... the other advantage of this livery is that the wheels are black and the tender frames, etc. are unlined. Ian Matthews is getting a reputation for some brilliant paint jobs, his lightning transformation of Bittern into DoNZ was stunning and his work on Scotsman also looked great.

Personally, I rather liked 60163 in its "stealth" grey livery! :peep:

As far as I know, he didn't paint scotsman? East Lancs Railway mag says it was Ian Hewitt who painted it, not mathews. Unless Mathews did the tender?

You're right, I think he just did the tender which was at the NRM while he was painting Tornado....
