Yep, that's it, it was some sight watching the loco struggle up the bank.

I seem to recall that a diesel was supposed to have pushed it out but for some reasonable it was not possible.

I do remember having everything crossed, arms, legs, fingers, eyes (!) because the chuffs had slowed to one every few seconds, or so it seemed.

I have been on dozens on steam tours struggling up banks such as Dainton, Hermerdon, Rattery and Gomishall and in some cases they have stalled.

After a couple of minutes it was odds on that the train was also stall but thanks to great enginemanship and, thank God, a dry rail, we made it.

Interestingly PSOV included the initial departure from Bradford on one of there Mainline Steam videos, but amazingly the cut the clip short and missed the key struggle that followed.

What is does prove is what a fantastic loco the Black 5 is. Compared to any other UK Class 5 and includes Halls, Granges, B1's, Standard 5's it is simply the best in its class!

So you attribute this great escape to great enginemanship and a dry rail... and that proves black 5's are the best in their class does it ?...

I hear that the train is to be reduced by two coaches, those being taken off are the brake and more importantly the buffet....

I've had an email from a reliable source (not RTC) that this is correct; reducing the load to ensure there are no problems with the 5. That would imply there will be no diesel on the rear -- but I don't know !!!!
I'm on board with the grandkids and sincerely hope there is a trolley service.
At least I know about this, but wonder how many other folk in first / standard are aware of it.

Mmm, thanks guys, it would seem to be a strong rumour that has something in it. Oh well, we'll know for sure in a bit less than 10 hours! :)

    Hi,
After all the debate on here how did 45305 cope with the climb out of Liverpool, did it have a diesel on the back?
Curious as i'm at work all day helping the government out with a bit of extra tax.
Might get to see it on the return tonight.
    Regards,
    John.

I was at Edge Hill and Miles Platting, she did well on both climbs with 10 on, slight slip quickly controlled on Miles Platting. Video to follow later
