Yes all the Baltics had their issues! The LBSC ones were probably the most sucessfull and many have argued that it was poor track maintenance that caused the derailments, not the locos design. Crying shame that Rememberance was scrapped.

It had been rebuilt as an N15X so arguably not worth saving unless it could have been converted back to a tank loco.

Even as tender locos they were not highly regarded. I think most ended their days at Basingstoke, and they weren't considered a match for a King Arthur.

Wikipedia seems to agree with me (which is nice). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_N15X_class I saw them as a kid around Woking, but it was only their unusual names which attracted attention.

Hatchet jobs seem to be an LMS thing. Ramsbottom's plotting against Trevithick for example

the LMS garretts did a job, but really, they could have done so much more if the experts had been listened to.

okay, a new suggestion ... the Thomson A2/2

Yes I have read they were rather jaded after rebuilding, and only considered a very average loco with no outstanding features. BR got rid fairly quickly.....
