Following on from a few other hypothetical threads, what would you like to have been saved?

I'd love to have a look at a K2 or K3. I think the Great Northern Railway and Gresley were far ahead of their time by building a modern 2-6-0 and updating it with an extra cylinder later on (within the LNER). As I hail from up North I feel that a K2, in particular, played an important part in improving services out of Glasgow for the West Highlands.

    A1
    Saint
    Grange
    Patriot
    Brighton Atlantic
    47xx

Would have saved a lot of bother !

An SECR L1 or D1 4-4-0 without a doubt. Both looked very similar to me!

And in main line running order with a 75 mph top speed.

    Lovely, lovely machines.

Just imagine being able to time one of those on a Charing X to Dover via Tonbridge train. Light load and decent timings.

    Stuff dreams are made of.

K3, J39, V3, L1, P1, B17, B16 would all have been nice and (with the exception of the P1) would have looked good on our former LER lines. Perhaps we could also aadd a J38 for the SRPS.

Oh. For overseas steam, a Milwaukee F7 4-6-4 for sure. Stupendously fast and powerful machines. And about the best looking steam loco I've ever seen, (sadly only in photographs).

For my own part, and in no particular order, a V4, a Brighton mogul, a GWR saddle tank (just an 0-6-0, nothing special), K&ESR "Hecate" 0-8-0T, K&EST 2-4-0T "Tenterden", an Illfracombe Goods......

For me it would be one of the Horwich caprotti's either 44686/7.
All the problems that plagued the original ones had been sorted and they were reckoned by those who used them to be easily equal to a class 6.

    Cheers Dave

Caledonian Railway "Cardean" plus I wish Stanier hadn't had the preserved Midland Railway 0-6-0 and 0-4-4T cut up at Derby (thankgoodness this didn't extend to the Jones Goods and Caledonian Single in Scotland) Also the Broad Gauge Engines cut up at Swindon in around 1912 "Lord of the Isles and was it "North Star"? Throw in a complete rake of LNER "Coronation" coaches,"Bantam Cock" and my fantasy list is complete. Please no one suggest new build!

In my wilder dreams I imagine one of these is going to turn up somewhere in the middle east, hidden away in some long-forgotten shed. Well, we can dream!

For me, a broad gauge engine is a significant omission from our history that didn't survive (apart from the very atypical "Tiny"). And I'd love to have seen something like a Brighton Jenny Lind type from the Craven era. The quarter of a century from about 1845 to 1870 is poorly represented in preservation, relative to both the periods of similar length before and after (e.g. 1820 - 1845 and 1870 - 1895 are both quite well represented in comparison).

    Tom
