    It would appear that 55022 has now failed and is in Tiverton loop with the 47 running around to take the lead.
    Exhaust fire being quoted and "Two lineside fires near Whiteball".
    So it's not just steamers then!
    Whats NR going to do now in dry weather?

    Not too serious thankfully. Deltics are known for exhaust fires, but it appears that it was no more than a sparking/firework show at Whiteball.

    55022 departed from Paignton on both engines, with the 47 (47804) tucked in behind for insurance.

    I managed a few shots at Tredington in the last rays of sunshine! She seemed to be well and doing all the work!

    I've added them to my Local Lines Gallery for July (last 3 images)

    Hello All,

    Photographs of 55022 'ROYAL SCOTS GREY' & 47804 hauling 'The Devonian' into and away from Paignton Station have been added to my Rail Traction Photos site. Link here;

    Hope you enjoy. Also I can confirm that both Napier-Deltic engines were running as the tour left Paignton Station as I was stood right next to the locomotive. If further proof is wanted take a look at the superb shot of the tour departing on AMB's Photography site. 55022 showing the classic "V" formation with her exhaust fumes.

    Great shot IMO.

    As my mic seems to have malfunctioned and spoilt the video somewhat I thought I'd get a few grabs of 55022

    There was an actual fire with some 2ft flames eminating from the exhausts, though naturally this was blown out when they shut down and restarted the offending engine and revved it for a few minutes.
    I believe the plan was always for the 47 to be "inside" on the return north incase it was needed to provide assistance on the Lickey (why they couldn't do that from the rear I don't know).
    It was an excellent day though, nontheless.

    From what I gather, the oil and carbon builds up in the silencer/collector drum and it eventually heats up to its flash point and ignites, causing an exhaust fire. They can usually be extinguished by choking the fire by revving the engine, thus starving the fire of oxygen. It was a common problem with the class.
