I have heard that she may make her first appearance in grey primer whilst the first running in takes place.

When are they going to give up the pretense that anyone would really vote for crimson, given that it is going to be crimson in 12 months anyway. Has made the whole thing seem unpleasant. Still no response as far as I know, from the owners.

No chance Frank, in truth I think a year in each colour would please everybody, well nearly everybody!!!
This was being discussed on the CME Saturday and one conclusion we came up with that black made her look more menacing and powerful, blue, a bit girlyish, green could be mistaken for an escapee from the southern, red, well just about right as long as it was the right shade.

I fully agree with the variety proposal - sells more tickets too!

Black - didn't like that variant - I think it was the simple mass of the loco that made it unsuitable - and boy did it get dusty quick! more suitable for freight based BIG locos

Caledonian blue - girly!! - awaynbileyerheed - Go north young man and say that!

Green - was always the best colour and its sixteen years since we had a whole two weeks of that shade - and didn't it look good!

Red - what is the attraction??? Mind you - you know what they say about men and red sports cars - well if you're a bit short in that area........................

    Worked well on video though.

    :fish2: Gotcha....

Yes it does look good in the right shade like 46115, but having recently been in close proximity to Tangmere it sort of made me wonder, anyway now that's gone back to here far away pastures that shade can be forgotton...

My first car in 1960 was a 1937 MG TA in red, 19" wire wheels with 'wide' 5" tyres, those fabulous sweeping front mudguards that swept alongside the louvered bonnet almost to the doors. In those days red sports cars did not connect to anything other that a red sports car, anyway it was a crumpet puller and no mistake.

With the trust's web address of "http://www.prclt.co.uk" on the tender side?

Personally I want to see her in the guise of 6234 Duchess of Abercorn in experimental LMS blue/grey livery: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rorysmith/2320717895/in/photostream/

The reasoning is that a change of colour brings the loco some publicity and Joe Public thinks, nice shiny engine, I fancy a run with that.
I have found during my stewarding duties that quite a few people are interested in what's hauling the train, last Saturday for example some were surprised that it was not that "flat sided green one" again, that they has seen passing on one of the previous Fridays. Others wanted to know where was Oliver Cromwell was as they were expecting her, and then there was one who said "Oh I like the big red one", her exact words......:rolleyes1:

I think that would be a good idea actually although maybe every 2 years so its easier on cost of paint and get more chance to catch the liviery of your preference.

Hopefully one day I'll get a chance to ride behind this great loco.

I'm sorry if merchandising the product goes over the heads of the trainspotting fraternity - but I'm more interested in our hobby remaining viable than keeping any loco in one boring colour scheme forever.

I believe in authenticity so have no time for red 8Fs etc, but with Duchesses, as has already been demonstrated, there are at least six fully authentic liveries and as Ralph has commented -please don't treat the customer like a fool, especially ones who have paid more than some earn in a week for their day out.

That will be the end of the industry and the hobby.

An engine in the same colour for too long just becomes another engine.
Those that don't care.. It's just another engine.
Those that do care, ride on something else.
That could mean the difference between a profit and a loss.

I suspect some engines are only getting a large slice of work at thevexpense of nonavailability of others.

Same thing applies to coaches, 4492 and maroon Mark ones, you could at least pass off as a "preservation rail tour" of the 1960's or even 1980's ( to some of us that is history)..
But a blue A4 with green Mark 2's behind, becomes hard on the eyes.

On a side note, last week on the "yesterday" channel, did anyone else notice the archive footage of 70000 in Black, unnamed and no logo on the tender ?

People are interested in the engine but so long as it's a steam engine ,there are having a day out that is different and if the engine as a name they can remember all to the good .

The seat's that normally sell out first are usually premier dining not usually the area for the enthusiast.

As for a change of colour bringing publicity most of the public would not recognise Tornado now .

Not the case by any means! I took down a group of university students to see Tornado in 2010 at Loughborough, Great Central Railway, and hear a terrific lecture from David Elliot on the locomotive. A year on, and they've sent me texts saying they saw Tornado roll past on the mainline - and doesn't the new shade of green look smart!

For the record, they were a mixture of Art, Drama, English and Aeronautical Engineering students. None of them railway enthusiasts by any means. I don't think in some respects we give the general public who will travel on these trains enough credit: most of those I mentioned above recognized her by the blue nameplates.

I would expect university students after a one hour lecture to be able to recognize it no matter what there subject is .
