The Value of a Class 08 Shunter

Noted this on WNXX recently:

Just out of curiosity, how much does it cost to buy an 08 shunter? Quite a few preserved railways and the NRM have picked up some of these shunters, and I didn't think they were particularly flushed for cash, so to speak.

I know their value must be to some extent scrap value and or based on overall condition, but a ballpark figure for curiosity's sake would help!

 

I've often wondered about the cost of these things as well. Every so often EWS (or in the old days, BR) would announce the sale of some stock and some of it would be bought, but always for "an undisclosed figure". I'd be interested in a ball-park figure, though I suppose a lot depends on condition.

 

Most of the recently preserved ones have been bought by private individuals rather than heritage railways themselves.

 

I would say at least £10k in general scrap value

I was once told if you want to bid to win, multiply the weight (50 ton) against the current price of mixed scrap (£180ish per ton) and add 5 to 10% (to outbid the scrap man) So £10k would seem about right.

 

What about the copper content?

 

Moveright have one for sale at £30k + VAT (£36K total) if you fancy one.

 

Sadly Chaps for £10k you will not get an 08 from a DB tender list, we recently bid a lot more than that & our preferred loco will be going for scrap, because the Scrap dealers are paying high prices for them.

 

They dont always go to the highest bidder, Scrap dealers often get them as a job lot, because the railway companies want them off the books and off the tracks asap and they know that the scrap dealers pay and move them quickly.

 

Don't think you would buy a "goer" for scrap price. The locos from EWS etc are usually robbed of at least a few vital bits, if you bought two you probably couldn't make a runner out of some of them.

 

I recently asked for a price to buy two BT42 [b4] bogies. Quoted 2.5K Metal price £250 per ton X 10 tons. Bogies are mainly steel, locos contain a lot of copper the price of which is even higher.
Another issue is locos which have been stored for a long time may well have been stripped by thieves making restoration expensive, and time consuming

 

Thanks for the replies chaps. So in essence, a working one will be £30,000 +, a non runner with a lot to do is scrap value around £10,000?

It's interesting to see them coming up every so often. Once they're gone, they're gone, after all. The relative size and power of an 08 must still be of use to preservation, though?

 

You'll be lucky to get a non-runner for £10k. And by the time you've got it working you'll probably be nearer £20k.

Of use to preserved lines, yes, but have a home lined up and a clear plan before you part with your money, as most lines which want one will already have one!

I have just heard within the recent couple of days (sorry but I have forgotten here from) that a sale of a class 08 diesel shunter in wokring order although required some remedial work went through at a cost of £22,000
