Well they did drop one of those GM Deisels (ouch)... But i still think its Brill, if it happened then it would be a 'must see' and a steam shuttle from york would also be brilliant, regardless of what was pulling it and yes if volounteers are needed....

While those closely involved with the A4's were aware of the possibility of this happening and are working towards achieving the line up, there are a lot of delicate funding and loan requirement negotiations to complete with regards to the North American Locos.

If we were anywhere near a full agreement the NRM would have announced the possibility of this event.

By jumping the gun, as it were, Robin Jones has just made this potentially exciting event much less likely, and one suspects, for his own commercial reasons.

In my opinion to the news of suggestion of this event I think if this is to happen then it should be in closed doors paperwork till next year. I am not saying that it is a wonderful idea, possibly a bit too ambitious but that is where my main fear approaches. What seems to be an overscale ambition to announce the aims in public knowledge could place pressure?

At the same time, the weight of positive public feedback from such a story could make it more likely to happen, and if needed, a fund and / or campaign could launch to help ensure it happens.

Of course they wouldnt refuse the offer of a cosmetic restoration, but i cant see them agreeing to pay for it. While the NRM could ask for donations or fund it themselves, with the loss of NRM+ im not it would be wise to put so much effort into someone else collection.

As far as im aware these two dont have any great following, so i doubt most people would care. Correct me if im wrong, but im not aware that Dunrobin received much (if any) coverage when it left forever, so a foreign loco leaving for a few months isnt going to be terribly newsworthy. The same i guess is true here, european loco's dissapear over the channel with barely a mention even in the specialist press.

Its all relative - the cost is insignificant for multi-million pound loco's moved en-masse, in a chartered ship, from railhead to railhead. For these two the cost would surely be well into 5 figures, and i just dont see how any Mallard event is going to recoup that cost.

Perhaps i am being a little bit 'devils advocate' but unless there is someone willing to splash the cash and underwrite it, i cant see the financial sense of going to this much bother just to line up a couple more members of the same class.

True enough.. but it went back on a low loader / trailer, on a large roll on/off ship, rather than a lifting by a crane.

The Turkish 8F's came the same method, and I would expect the cost of sending the 2 A4s to York from NA would be the same as the cost of the 8F's from Turkey.. and probably not much difference in time... i'd speculate not much more than your average larger gala.

new large roll on / roll off ships open a whole new world of cheaper / safer / faster transport possibilities than days of cranes, pallets and ships holds.

If numbers 8 and 10 are not staying here, leave them where they are and raise the money to get Green Arrow back where she belongs. At least those who give will have the pleasure of 60800 for ten years plus.

But surely people who donate to the movement cost for Dwight D and Dominion might not donate to the restoration of Green Arrow - as I said in the Scotsman thread people will donate to any project they want and cannot be forced to donate to any other. IF a fund was launched to cover the cost of the 2 ex-pat A4's to visit here I would donate, likewise if they asked for money to steam Green Arrow I would contribute to that as well. Fingers crossed both will happen.

Correct. I last saw nos. 8 and 10 when I was a sprog so the chance to see them again along with the UK A4s is a chance not to be missed. I'll gladly cough up a few shekels for that just as I would for any appeal to overhaul 60800.

Even though it would be nice to see them, surely the money spent getting them over here and shipping them back again would be better spent on restoring another locomotive.

but that is the whole point . The money may not be contributed to another locomotive . You can't make people donate to a cause , we have choice .

    All 6 A4's together , absolutely please

Just for good measure what about adding 60532 Blue Peter and 60163 Tornado to the line up.

Far better to clear out the great hall and fill all available space with LNER locos.

More to the point - whilst I would love to see No 8 - (Cop)and No 10 - again, I would rather see 60532 and 60800 run again.

I'd prefer to see 4468 running in 2013 but failing that an A4 gathering will do very nicely thank you.
