You will have seen us in the car park Simon, sorry didn't see you. You may also have seen me making an awful amount of racket (and not going all that fast!) at Blaenau last week,we drove past you (before getting stuck waiting for portacabins on a lorry to come past!)

Saddleworth viaduct on the outward last Friday. I had planned to get the shot on the hillside, but after a 3 hour drive straight from a night shift at work, I couldn't be bothered to try and find the spot so ended up at the same spot as the previous week.

Cheers Mark. In a way shame the weather wasn't better, but if it was sunny that would be an evening shot. Still, I'm happy with it, though not happy with having to fork out for 2 new tyres later in the day!

Hi Chaps - what's the latest with the roadworks around Saddleworth? BBC Travel News for Manchester says:
I'm staying in Diggle on Thursday evening, arriving between 8 and 9pm. The route I know is from the M62 J21 at Milnrow, through Denshaw and Delph. Perhaps more to-the-point, what about getting to the M62 on Friday morning to go across towards York? On previous visits, I've gone to Denshaw then J22. Should I go via Marsden, "Slowwit" and Scapegoat Hill?

If the weather's nice (ha ha!) I'll head for the hillside opposite Mossley on Friday morning. Otherwise it's the bridleway opposite Shaw's Mill, which is walking distance from my B&B.

By the way, I gather it's the Saddleworth Rush Cart Festival this weekend. All traffic will come to a standstill on Saturday as the Morris Men take over. Fantastic event!

I'm working on the morning so I wont be out for this but if you haven't had a reply from Frank or Matt on here who live in the area by tomorrow afternoon I will give one of them a ring for an update on the roadworks.

    Neil.

As I found out today, Kirkham Abbey is gated and operated by a wheel.

    Re: Scarborough Spa Express 2011

I'm a newbie and although, as a wrinklie, I have lots of interest and nostalgic affection for the days of steam, I am no expert. I have spent some great days at the many preservation societies. Spent a great week travelling up and down the Severn Valley line last October and it whetted my appetite for another trip.
I have a trip booked (August 26th) on the Scarborough Flyer operated by The Railway Touring Co. It runs from Crewe on Fridays and I board at Wilmslow.
They say on their website that their current pool of three locos consists of: 6201 Princess Elizabeth, 70013 Oliver Cromwell and 6100 Royal Scot. Reading these forums it seems that it is quite possible for the loco to fail and a diesel to take over which would be disappointing (sorry diesel fans!). Also I have seen posts about 6100 Royal Scot not being completed at Crewe Heritage Centre yet. So have they only got the two? Anybody used this service? Is 6100 now running?

    Re: Scarborough Spa Express 2011

Hi Tom, 6100 is as far as we know still in bits, the Flyers are being run with 6201 and 70013 usually alternating, as it is expected to be 6201 tomorrow 19th, there is a reasonable chance that it will be 70013 on the 26th. 45305 is providing back up for the weekend when there is a North Wales Coast Express running as this coming week end, Friday 6201 Flyer, Saturday 5305 CME, Sunday NWCE 70013 and Monday, the Moorlander with 5305 again. Note that is the plan, circumstances cause things to change....

Is there anyone out on the Flyer tomorrow, I'm on and text updates will be made, usually not too many if we are on or near to time. More frequently if circumstances dictate.

    Re: Scarborough Spa Express 2011

Many thanks for the info Ralph. Not really worried so long as it's one of them. 6201 has a bit of history on account of that 1936 speed record. Ollie has some past too. Operated the last passenger steam train and the last BR loco to receive a routine heavy overhaul, etc.
Pity about the RS, think that would have been my real choice (North American exploits, etc. - how did they solve the track gauge problem?).

Fingers crossed for a problem free journey on the 26th.
