    Amen to that!

I'm currently on the Ulysses heading for the land of the leprechauns - I'll probably find more sense amongst them than amongst some so called enthusiasts who simply don't understand the camaraderie of steam, and have to keep on inventing stories to feed their conspiracy theories!

If 60532 is going to be overhauled (even if a full transfer of ownership is not part of the deal) then whoever does it will would expect be knocking on the NELPG, A1SLT and one or two other doors for advice, drawings, patterns etc which im sure would be forthcoming...

Now everyones had a good blowdown (ooh err) Perhaps we should shut this thread and start another one when theres some actual information released from the actual owners/trustees etc

but no, i have a question, why does the A2 have that large casement on top of the boiler behind the chimney (roughly above the superheater header) but an A1 doesnt... is that to do with the different regulator ? looks a bugger dunt it.

2 pages is all it took, and then it all started up. And the sad fact is its all speculation that been frothed over. If this forum is an example of the steam preservation movement as a whole, I'm glad I'm not involved.

To find out what the steam preservation movement is really like, you need to be involved. It does contain some odd characters but those I've met and work with are mostly good types.

Blue Peter is fitted with a multiple valve regulator, hence the linkage along the boiler and saddle on the smokebox (similar to BR standards) whereas the A1's had the standard LNER type. If you check out BP's boiler you will find a blanking plate on the backhead where the original fitting has been replaced - the boiler was common to the two classes. The fact that BP had a multiple valve type has been attributed as a factor in the cause of its slip at Durham.

I'll stick with me diesels ta ;) This doesn't mean I don't like steam, because I do. Everybody I've ever met in the diesel world has been friendly and pretty honest.

Blasphemy though this is, seems like an occaision that a backward step would be a good move, and more than just for looks sake. But it is what it is, and as the last of its type it should be kept that way.

Was this an 'as built' feature or a BR add on... ?

COBOMAN, is clearly jealous of the near hysteria that a wee snippet about one of the Giants of steam can generate, clearly not enough going on on the 'Chugginton' section.

    Good night all, God bless.

Give it time. You'll meed some nutters eventually.
Hope you've got a good fire extinguisher for that Co-Bo of yours. Seems their BR default setting was "on fire." :)

I've been under the impression that a multiple valve regulator was more sensitive than an orthodox type, and they were fitted to the A2's as a try out for the BR Standard Pacifics.

Indeed. Alas the Durham incident was about driving technique, not the equipment fitted to the loco. As I understand it the driver had been given some duff advice about how to control it and gave it a fistful leaving the station which lead to carry-over and an uncontrollable slip, compounded by his hand being injured by the spinning reverser. However, since I wasn't there this is all second-hand...... Maurice Burns was and wrote subsequently, "The crew was advised (to get the A2 into the big valve after the engine has gathered speed) to shut the regulator, wind the reverser towards mid-gear, then open the regulator fully.... With a 500 ton train and a rising gradient the engine stood no chance. Of course, the crew did not know Blue Peter does not have a big valve at all - it has a multiple valve regulator"

Whatever happens to Blue Peter, I hope it makes a return to the main line in the near future. It certainly is an excellent performer.

This has been brought up a few times now and the answer is the same. There are no current plans to move Braunton to Southall.
