What`up in recent years with this certain individual?

Firstly he resigns from the Lynton and Barnstaple project and launches a tirade of criticism at fellow trust members for wanting to get things going, by using non authentic rolling stock.

Then he pops up and starts to stir things up at the NRM, regarding Scotmans non authentic appearance and presentation.

I`m surprised he hasn`t taken a pop at the Vulcan to the Sky Trust for not restoring the bomb bay on XH558 and fitting a nuclear bomb!

I think the guy just needs to wake up and realise that in this day and age, a 95% near enough interpretation is better than none.

Not strictly true. Whilst Humorist did carry a double chimney and LNER apple green livery, the smoke deflectors were nothing like those fitted to the rest of the A3s in BR days. They were full length in the style carried by Tornado. So as it stands, 4472's livery and external appearance will not be representative of any class member.

It would be an accurate representation of how 4472 was before it was saved for the nation, and how it appeared in the late 1990's.

History doesn't stop in 1968, if it did then Tornado should not carry that name and should carry the number of a 1960's classmate in order to be authentic... But I don't hear complaints about that.

At the end of the day it's only paint, and in this instance, paint and the two ends of a loaf of bread.

Never said it did stop in 1968. I was answering the post where it was claimed that it was representative of Humorist which it isn't. Nor did I say I disapprove of Scotsman's appearance.

aside from being half defended by the caprotti 5 at ELR, I've nothing against them. Handy way of dealing with 3 cylinder machines ... how many does the FS have again?

The FS have two Caprotti standard gauge steam locos:
    1) the 2-8-0 two outside cylinders mixed traffic 744.118 (similar to GWR 4700 class) built in 1928;
    2) the 2-6-0 two inside cylinders 625.308 for light mixed traffic, built in 1904 as 600.008 and transformed with Caprotti valve gear in 1931.

Now you have me searching the conscience.
Yes i also think its a good solution for 3cylinders or even 2(like on the Ivatt 5's) im a big fan and unlike walshaerts development is still on going too , like all the others it has its strengths and weaknesses. (Imagine the noise of that caprotti 5 working hard at 75mph....)
But coupled with those big finespoked wheels and slender rods the eccentric motion of the walshaerts gear on FS when its moving slowly enough to appreciate it, is mesmerising and sheer 'poetry'

To 74144 whom we have confused by referring to Flying scotsman as FS, Sorry. But an interesting snippet nevertheless.

My apologies for the lateness in my reply, we're both partially correct (to an extent!). The full length A2 deflectors were fitted in 1947. I assumed the small wing type additions to Humorist were a post-war, pre-Peppercorn addition, but these were fitted in 1938, and can be seen in the image below:

The image is taken from the LNER forums, and is of a brass model depicting the locomotive in its 1938-47 form. A stovepipe double chimney was fitted, and the deflectors soon after.

So in effect, yes, Scotsman's wartime black is a bit of an anomaly, even for Humorist - but it's not that far away in terms of overall look, I would challenge.

Given it's being used simply as undercoat for running in trials, and was trying to offer something different anyway, one wonders what all the fuss was about - surely people wouldn't have accepted just the grey undercoat in place for the unveiling of 4472...? ;)

Nice pic of Humorist here with the later A1/ A2 type smoke deflectors.

    http://www.lner.info/locos/A/a1a3a10.shtml

Would these be better or worse aesthetically for 'Flying Scotsman' (fitted to Humorist in 1947 so only just an LNER precedent)? My thought is they detract from the lines of the A3 less than the German type deflectors but they would, of course, be historically inaccurate for 4472 but then so is the double chimney etc. for LNER livery as had been debated many times).

The same article compares the cost of building A1 Tornado with the cost thus far (including purchase price of £2.31million) of 4472's restoration. Told you it would have been cheaper to build a new A3 and preserve 4472 in a large glass case for all eternity!
Apologies, bit of a cheap shot on a serious subject I know.
