Sounds a very sensible idea to build and wheel the pony trucks first to enable the chassis to be moved about the site as required and importantly that way the cost is spread in a more manageable way for the members. Smoke box saddle looks great after being blasted.

Which is one advantage of it finally being a 2-6-2. Clearly a lesson has been learned from what was a 4-0-2 at the same location.

Way to go 82045! Brilliant progress.... with so much fabricated, is she going to be lighter than the originals?

    Thanks Foxy!

82045 is being built exactly to Robert Riddles design using Swindon drawings. Fabrications and castings will be the same as the original locos so will weigh the same (allowing for the fact that steel is supplied in metric thickness today). That smokebox saddle was a bit heavy!

Well, there you go, you learn summat every day, I had thought the saddle would have been cast originally!

I`m reliably informed by him who knows that most saddles would have been cast but not on the Class 3 tanks apparently!

A bit of both actually. The Brits, Clans and (I think) the 9Fs had a cast steel exhaust manifold welded into a fabricated smokebox saddle (box). I'm not too sure about t'other classes but I'm always willing to be educated.

Fully fabricated saddle and exhaust manifold 75, 77, 80, 82 and 92 classes. The 75 and 80 classes had a cast blastpipe base welded in place on the saddle.
    Fabricated saddle with cast exhaust manifold 70, 72, 73, 76, 78 and 84 classes.
It is worth noting that the Stanier Class 5s and 8Fs and the Ivatt 4 and 2MTs were also fitted with fabricated saddles with cast exhaust manifolds.

Many thanks for the correction regarding the 9Fs. I was a little surprised about that for such large class,

Your posting confirms the construction methods were anything but standard! But we digress.

MM, no you haven't, you've been at the substances again! Remember the "not for children" Rainbow episode? It must be on You Tube somewhere.
Back on thread (briefly), a really inspirational project this one; it'll be even better when 82046 follows it, as I just know it will (Pleese lottery!).

Looking excellent there! A taste of things to come indeed. 60163 and 82045 together in dark green one day. No dream, just a question of when.
