This is the engine I was pulled by most when I visited. Where and which engine? Also what is the relevance of the engine name. Have fun!

I took the photo, it's not the most original sort of image ever I'm afraid.

    That was fun!

I've just played 'spot the difference' with a photo of Linda and Blanche (at http://www.festrail.co.uk/cgi-bin/e...mage;p=Locomotives/Linda;i=1;img=AT233698.JPG ), so I'd agree Linda and Penrhyndeudraeth, but I had no idea of why the loco was named Linda. After a bit of research, I read on http://www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/Linda that Linda was named after The Hon. Linda Blanche Douglas-Pennant (born on 25 Jan 1889, died 8 Jul 1965) who was the daughter of Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant, 3rd Baron Penrhyn.

Sounded plausible at first, but if Linda was manufactured by Hunslet in 1883 along with her sister loco Blanche, Linda Blanche Douglas-Pennant wasn't born then?

Edward Sholto Douglas-Pennant's wife was named Blanche, so that sounds sounds plausible for Blanche - so did Linda have an earlier identity?

    Cheers

    Keith

The obvious difference between Linda and Blanche is that Linda has an open cab while Blanche has a tender-cab. I'm sure there are 100s of other minor differences between the two but this is one of the most notable ones.

An easy spot from the front view is the cylinders. Linda has the original slide valve ones that are square at the top, Blanche has piston valve ones, much rounder at the top. Also, Blanche has two straight whistles Linda has one straight and one well, erm not!

I believe Linda does have a back for the cab, it is more removable, unlike that on Blanche.

As you say, there are a few other little ones as well I am sure!

Thanks to the people who have taken part in this thread. Richieboy had it bang on. I saw Blanche once while I was away. I found it next to impossible to tell the difference as she rocketed by.
