With the imminent completion of 4472s overhaul, thoughts amongst us enthusiasts are naturally going to turn to what the NRM should, in our opinion, steam next.

Please note - this thread is meant to be lighthearted and a bit of fun - choose the loco you would most like to see, not the one you think would be most sensible! This thread is not meant to be made up of demands to the NRM, who do a superb job - it's just a bit of daydreaming.

So here are my three, in order of preference:

    GNR Atlantic No.990 'Henry Oakley'
    LMS 2-6-4T No.2500
    L&YR 2-4-2T No.1008

Although I can hear the trumpets sounding from over the hill from the 'not another Bulleid' brigade, I'd like to see 34051 given an airing and gracing the mainline network just to say that all preserved members have steamed in preservation. The Q1 is another wish as I missed her when she was in steam. Non-Southern, then I suppose it'll have to be (4)6229 just for the difference, and maybe 92220.

Isn't 2500 rumoured to be steamed soon so you may get one of your 3 :D.

    Mine are.

LMS Coronation 6229 Duchess of Hamilton (again might be in the near future)
    SR Q1 C1
SECR D 737 (So we could have a SECR line up of a H Class, P Class, D Class, C Class and O1 Class)
    LBSCR Gladstone
    BR 9F 92220 Evening Star
    LNER V2 4771 Green Arrow

I'd rather see 251 steam over 990 tbh.

    My 3 would be though;
    4771 Green Arrow
    Compound 1000
    T3/Q7 901

The sooner 4771 returns the better but either of the Ivatt Atlantics would be good two. Managed one trip behind 990 on the KWVR back in 1977(?) but would love to be able to repeat that several times over.

Easily 251 for me. Why? The opportunity in the next decade to line it up alongside an in-steam 32424. The two surviving GNR boilers and to showcase the two developments of that original Ivatt atlantic found in Henry Oakley. Would be something special indeed.

The loco I would most like to see in steam; easy. Barclay 2373 of 1956. Why? Simply because its something a little bit different...

Alternatively Aerolite, for pretty much the same reason!

4771 or 92220 for me, only got to experience the former once and seen as it's the only loco of it's kind then it deserves another 10 years on the rails.

Its a case of what locomotive the NRM can use as a plaything; Thats the reason they made a case for Flying Scotsman. Its such a mixed bag of styles, from various eras, that the NRM can use it without really affecting its 'historical integrity'. It's much the same for City of Truro.

If you want to have the NRM using a locomotive, its probably easier if the locomotive is not 'as was'. There's not really much point in asking for a locomotive, such as Lode Star, which is still pretty much 'as was'.

Just how I see it. Others might not see it that way.

I cannot see any point in steaming any loco where there is an example already running, or on the brink of doing so, so that rules out several suggestions. Then, whatever is chosen needs to be able to earn its keep and I 'd say that really narrows the choice down to the large GNR Atlantic, Green Arrow or the Stanier tank - and the decision seems to have been made in favour of the latter, presumably on cost grounds, and also perhaps because unlike 4771 it hasn't been run before. It's probably better suited to the type of use it's going to get. It would have been nice to see the Atlantic at the head of a train of teak coaches though. My personal favourite (in the absence of 4771) would be the NER 4-4-0 1621: there are too few 4-4-0s running.

Midland compound would be nice. Ideal size for preserved lines.
