2500 without a doubt, though im a bit worried that with NRM+ in the bin it wont be happening. The Midland Compound should also see the mainline again; just like the 3 cylinder tank, you really need to see and hear it working to appreciate what makes it special.

My vote would be for NER 4-4-0 No 1621, the nearest thing we can get to a D20. Having seen all the NRM locos that have steamed since 1975 working, it's got to be one of the older ones, hence the NER 4-4-0.

Whilst not at the NRM, the Jones Goods 4-6-0 HR 103 was a very fine sight when working and would pay good money to see her working again.

Well since we're on it, I'll say it. 35029 Ellerman Lines.

And for a 'that would be interesting' choice, I'd nominate 'Copperknob'

For me it would have to be 6229 because it would be a one off, whilst there are other dutcheses, out there, none are in streamlined form and would be another crowd pleaser , in my view york should give it serious thought and seek the funds asap via public appeals etc failing that, i would love to see either the SECR D class or the LSWR adams 4-4-0 returned to steam as long as they are in suitable condition to be returned to steam, thats the biggest problem, what locos in the collection are in a suitable condition to allow a return to steam , i would think not very many now certainly not very many of the earlier preserved locos

Yuo'll have to declare an interest so you're not allowed to choose.!!
42500 is the obvious choice, followed by the Midland Compound because we can 't really interpret and learn about compound operation now. Those with the experience are getting less and less and we are in danger of losing the knowledge.
Not sure about 251. Aren't there problems with the boiler due to its 'unrebuilding' when it became a museum piece? 990 as a substitue, though. A 4-4-0 would definitely be a good choice and it would be good to get the chance to find out just how good those Lanky Radials were, as well.
Go on, let's steam the lot except where there is already duplication.

Yep with you on that one. Certainly attention (and funds) post 4472 should not be spent on yet another 4-6-2. Lets have something a little more "workaday" - after all this is the National Collection.

GNR(I) No85 Merlin will hopefully return to steam next year. She is a 4-4-0 and also a compound :)

Please, Please, Please, lets do the NSR tank engine, it's a disgrace the the smaller railways never get a look in. This engine would grace any heritage line and be a welcome addition to the NRMS working engines.

I think attention should be given to some of the smaller locos, which although prob wouldn't get to work on the main line, could well draw crowds on the NRN's demoline or evn be loaned / hired out to preserved lines.
Initially the J69 tank loco 87 and the NSR battery loco. For real novelty value, how about Pet or Wren?
In the mid 1970's I travelled onmainline excursions behind the Midland Compound and Hardwick (although not simultaneously). I also saw Evening Star and the S&D 2-8-0 hauling excursions. Seems a pity that none of those four are out & about.
For a real draw, how about the Shutt End loco Ageonoria?

It's got a a superheated boiler with no superheaters! I.e. the flues are there, but empty. When superheated the chimney had to be moved forward. When restored in the early 50s it was fitted with a new boiler that had had the superheater was removed and the chimney put back to the original position, but the flue tubes were left. Not sure what the best way to restore it now would be. New tube plates with small tubes only, or reinstate the superheater and move the chimney forwards again. Personally I'd go for the latter, to see what the loco is really capable of. It was also refitted with slide valve cylinders instead of piston valves.

As an afterthought, the E4 could do with another lease of life. I'm sure the NNR would love to give it a working home.
