We shouldn't forget 251 actually ran in it's current form.....on the Plant Centenarian.

I would add my vote for the 4-4-0's though, as a balance between usefulness and grace. Preferably the North Eastern 1621 though! Oh, and the Fletcher 910.....maybe not so useful though.

Really looking forward to seeing Cheltenham running on the MHR. Should be quite soon now. When she's nicely run in, the Watercress Line could invite Sir Lamiel, T9 30120 and the Beattie Well Tank to an NRM "Southern Gathering", along with Nellie.

Top of the day-dream list: LSWR T3 (though the SECR D would be nearly as good)
MR 1000 would be facinating, if not the most useful loco, commercially (high axle-weight, IIRC, but not strong enough for regular solo mainline work?) Might be a suitable replacement for City Of Truro in the roster (her boiler certificate must be nearing its end by now).
Practical suggestion for the mainline: 6229; or 4771 if only the cylinder casting could be repaired or replaced.
    For preserved lines: Q1 C1

It's good to see the support that the Compound has generated - double-headed with a Jubilee over the S & C please :) (This time without the blizzard!)

Well, Steam Dreams have conducted their Cornish Riviera, ACE and Coronation epics - perhaps it's the LMS's turn?!

    The Royal Scot -2018

Day 1 - Streamlined 6229 London Euston - Preston, 6203 Preston - Glasgow over Shap
    Day 2 - Jubilee Glasgow - Stranraer
Day 3 - Patriot and Compound Glasgow - Hellifield over S&C, 46115/6100 Hellifield - London St. Pancras

I'll just go and get my dibs in now...

If you put all the above back in steam you'll need an interesting yard shunter - Bauxite!

I think/hope that most would agree with me when I say that Bauxite, above all other locos, ought never to be 'restored'.

Anthony - which one is Margaret?

Good man; I thought I was the only one who would select that! A little-though of aspect of our railway heritage.

I think the winding engine in the corner of the Great Hall is a prime candidate for a return to steam. No need to fit TPWS or OTMR just buy a long rope and plonk it at the end of the Scarborough line.

I really do think that if the NRM are considering steaming parts of their collection that have not seen fire in their belly for many years they should look at locos that are not already represented by ‘similar’ looking locomotives in preservation . I could list some of the obvious contenders as follows:

    The ‘NO’ list
GWR Star – loads of similar GWR locos
    LMS 2500 – Fairburn & Std Tanks
Winston Churchill – Tangmere, Manson etc etc

    The ‘YES’ list
    MR Compound
    L&Y 2-4-2T
    Duchess of Hamilton

I’m sure I could add further to the above list, but if you get my drift that there should really be some strategic thinking that should go on in an esteemed organization like the NRM, and not pander just the whims of the enthusiast community that just want everything to steam again irrespective of the unique value of some of the locos in the NRM collection.

There is strategic thinking and we have done it. The previous 10 pages here are wishful thinking of NP users, but after all we are a museum and running is but part of our remit.

You are right Anthony, the last 10 pages have been just that wishful thinking, something that most of us are very good at. You no doubt have your plans and they will be made public as and when is appropriate. We can but hope they are what will please most of us.
