Using a variety of motive power including steam and diesel between Shildon and York.

Is there any information available yet on which engines are working the shuttles?

'Olton Hall' and 'Oliver Cromwell' are the 'steamies' but no one at York can tell me which loco is hauling which train - steam services:
    1. Shildon to NRM York service, departing Shildon at 12.15.
    2. NRM York to Shildon service, departing at 14.30.
It would seem that if you want to have a full day at either museum you probably won't get to travel by steam, which is a shame.

According to uksteam on the Saturdays Ollie goes from Shildon to York with Olton Hall from York to Shildon with the roles reversed on the Sundays.

Now listed on NRM website as Princess Elizabeth and Olton Hall with the 47 making only one trip each day

I wonder how these will operate now as each loco always works in the same direction (6201 twice from York to Shildon each day, 5972 once from Shildon to York each day), so how do locos get back for their next trip each time?

Engines have to face smokebox first on the mainline and with no run around method at Shildon capable of turning the engine then the train will be top and tailed with Olton or 47798, meaning Princess is free to face southbound. Also I think you pay to uncouple on the main network.

NRM website suggests you can pay on the day "Tickets purchased onboard must be paid for by cash only." that's what I'm planning on doing

That's right. RTC's site has just withdrawn the booking for the 17th/18th on line facility (I presume that's because they couldn't now get tickets posted out in time), we'll be doing just that. Still don't want to get to York & find out the return's booked for the 47 though...

I think you'll find the NRM site is actually the right one.

Just thought I'd mention that some of the times published at the NRM website were incorrect, and have been changed this afternoon to bring them in line with those originally published at uksteam.info !

In addition, please come and ride, not just to look. We have had lots of people at Shildon come today wanting to watch, and have been trying to encourage them to take at least one trip over the two weekends. I also see that DRPS at North Road are open for visitors tomorrow and Sunday, and the shuttles stop there too - so one could do them and Darlington Railway Museum as well.

So is one loco running in reverse on each trip and will that mean a 40mph restriction due to tender first running?

No, top and tailed, with each loco chimney first in its respective direction of travel. As part of a train, it is then pulled backwards as part of the train, and not technically tender first (ie. pushing the coal cart in front of it)
