I notice that there are some rather interesting photos that our good friend "West Somerset Wizard" has on http://www.wsr.org.uk/ showing the re-assembly of 7828.
It will be nice to once again hear the bark of a Manor in the Somerset hills.

    Cheers,

    Paul

Yes - it's amazing what a difference putting the frame back onto the wheels makes to the perception of progress. Nice to see the boiler work is well advanced at Crewe as well. Now when that comes back she'll really start to look finished.
BTW - did everybody spot our amazingly clean and very orange CME in the pictures?

She looks lovely on the pics that have been posted on http://www.wsr.org.uk/ . That paint job looks as good as Braunton's. Well done to all concerned, perfect loco for the line.

Very nice pics, one question though - i thought the frames in BR livery were painted green, not black like GWR livery, or is that a difference between BR Early Crest & BR Late Crest ?, not having a moan before anyone starts, just curious.

Again not moaning, but curious. But noticed the tender top "flare" is lined out. Again thought that was in GWR days & plain green in BR days.

I think your both right, quite sure the frames should be green with BR livery. Although it is nice to see 7828 with an early crest as she was the only one to do so in steam days, with BR green that is.
And yes sadly the top flare of the tender shouldn't be lined out to be correct. But then with it not running with the correct name I guess that can all be overlooked.
    Looks very good though.

That's interesting about the early crest, I suppose it came about with change over from lined black to green around 1956. I guess 7828 was the first manor to be painted green under BR.

I wouldn’t be so sure. There’s a photograph in “Collett Granges and Manors” by Roy Hobbs with exactly that. It features No.7801 “Anthony Manor” taken in 1958 carrying both lining on the top flare as well as well as black frames in BR early crest green. Whether this livery is unique to 7801 I don’t know but I somehow I doubt it.

I'd be interested to see that picture of 7801 if you can post it up...? As only ever seen/known of 7828 getting that. She was turned out in July'56 in BR green. There is writing that says the fenders on the tender were lined in Jan'57 but not seen any pictures of that.
As for lower frames painted in green, as far as I'm aware that was also the case, and the shame on most GW class if BR days. But also tricky to tell 100% in B&W photos.

I must admit i never noticed the frames were different colours between GWR & BR liveries until someone pointed it out to me, though so far it sounds like 7828's livery is an early variation of sorts rather than inaccurate.

I believe there were three GW 3,500 gallon tenders which were fully lined out in this style with the early crest in 1957 . They all orginally ran behind 43xx Moguls. Two ran behind engines employed on royal train duties on, I think, the Taunton-Barnstaple branch. The third ran for some years with no 4358. There was also another tender where the lining was in a single panel which extended up over the side fenders. This was attached to no 6308, but I think this tender got repainted fairly rapidly.
