On a visit to Llangollen Railway there where two Austerity locos on site. One was 68030 inside the loco shed. Out side was another black Austerity with no markings on. I was about to take a photo of the plaque which probably had the works number on when my guide said a little black plaque near the drivers cab would identify it. It read 2235/72.
I have tried to trace this Austerity but can not find any info on this engine. Looked at wikipedia Hunslet list and can't find the number there either. Would anyone know the identity of this engine. Took these two photos, one of the plaque with the number I can't find.

It is Vulcan Foundry 0-6-0ST 5309 / 1945 - see the excellent UK Locos site, http://www.uklocos.com/

Recent Llangollen pix added here, most taken in the workshops where new builds 45551 The Unknown Warrior and 6880 Betton Grange stand side by side. I have also added photos taken during the first 'Steel, Steam & stars' gala in 2007, as well as recent photos of a vist to the Llanberis Lake Rly. They can all be seen here:

    Cheers Andrew,
Thanks for the info and the uklocos site and your phohos are excellent. I missed going to the carriage sheds as I had the family in tow and was short on time. I am thinking of trying again this weekend coming. I read that you can park in a lay bye and walk down a narrow lane to the carriage sheds is that what you do.

Albert - Happy to help. My visit to the sheds was part of a group tour, not sure that casual visitors would be welcome, maybe best to contact the railway in advance.

    Hi there

Would casual visitors please note that there is NO public access to the Llangollen Railway's carriage/dmu sheds, either on foot or by motor vehicle.
At the bottom of the narrow lane mentioned there is a gate which is the limit of public access. Any further than this involves a walk along the shed access track for which purpose PTS and permission is required.
We have had a number of near misses on the crossing at the bottom of this lane and this area is unsighted to the drivers of oncoming trains. Please note that all tracks in this area are bi-directional.
Visits for organised parties are sometimes possible by prior arrangement and only when no trains are moving around the depot. Contact the railway's office to make arrangements.
Casual visits to Llangollen loco are also not allowed but a polite request to one of the members will usually lead to someone being found to show you round.

Today, I noticed that this mystery loco has swapped places with 4115 and is now minus its boiler. Whether she's being broken up or dismantled for overhaul, things seem to be progressing

The Austerity is owned by a chap involved with the Colne Valley Railway, and came to Llangollen in 2006 for its overhaul to be finished off. It was steamed on a couple of occasions just after the first SSS event, but there were 'issues' with the boiler (not overhauled at Llangollen). Due to these issues, work on the loco stopped untill they could be resolved. Last week the boiler was lifted out of the frames again and sent back for further work.

As wcmlbls1846 says above, it is a Vulcan built loco, and has the number 72.
