Why not ? I mean people will understand what it is they are paying for...
People paid £100k for Virgin Galactic flights back in 2005... it's not carrying passengers yet.
there's two ways to look at this..

    1. Inflation makes the ticket bidding attractive now for future passengers
    2. The group gets money it needs now (which saves inflation costs on materials later).

I would run the auction over a long period though, maybe even a year (granted it may turn stale for a while but the price will only go up).
If it's successful you could run multiple auctions (i.e. 1st train, 1st mainline, 1st foot plate experience etc etc).

the Class 15 diesel group did something like this a few years back for a cab ride on D8233 when it's complete, with a caveat that the actual date is open ended.

Do you know anything about the history of this chimney, other than its from a Patriot? Fascinating thing the Patriot Chimney, it always looks "strange" to my eyes compared to many other locomotive chimneys. It definitely gives the Class their "persona".

Gav106, many thanks for the information. This adds a bit of "pedigree" to our Patriot. I expect there will be a few more original fittings that will find their way onto this magnificent locomotive as time goes on (I'm aware of the original LMS pattern buffers as one example already).

I hope so too as it can save us some money. haha. We have the motion from the Jubs as well. Plus some original LMS lamps. Im sure there are other parts out there. Possibly cab fittings etc. We have 6 years to hunt them down. haha. We are lucky enough to have a chap who is big with in the Auction world so he lets us know of items if they appear.

Hope you are coating with anti-rust.....this present weather is ideal for bare metal for rust to develop on the surface of machined parts

On the 6th October 2011, to advertise the new build patriot. "The LMS Patriot Project" new locomotive headboard was shown off to the public at the GCR S & D Steam Gala, with the headboard been carried on West Sommerset Railways S&D 7F 2-8-0 No. 88 on the Thursday & Friday, quite appropriate as it is a Fowler locomotive.

Thankyou. The wheels have now gone to the South Devon Railway. Hoping to have them all done and in the frames for may/June next year. Its members day on the 9th June so all members will be invited to see the rolling chassis. So if anyone on here wants to join up and help build her/come to members day next year/even volunteer on the Sales stand see http://www.lms-patriot.org.uk/membership.html

We are hoping to actually shunt the rolling chassis so it really is one to put in your diary.

What is the situation with the cylinders and external motion brackets?

cylinders are still being talked about. I know were keen on fabrication as long as its ok with vab. But I know nothing about the brackets. I'm sure they have talked about it ill know more at the end of Jan.

Out of interest (and while we're on the subject of fabrication as opposed to casting), is a properly fabricated cylinder any weaker in any way (or stronger) than a casting? I appreciate that to fabricate is cheaper and easier in this day and age, but is it in any way a compromise? Are there/could there be issues with expansion rates?

I don't know, I'm not trying to stir, I'm interested so I'm asking.
