Nice shot Don thanks, and no worries about being in my video, when I go to a station someone always is, it's unavoidable. It's not like I'm making TV programmes!

And in turn, I was in 73096std5's video too.

You would have been as well except I was blocking his view of you

It is good to see in the latest MNLPS magazine that closure has finally been brought to this unfortunate incident. It's also pleasing to read of what we can infer were the open discussions that took place amongst all parties following the incident and subsequently. Whilst, as you would expect, the report has professionalism woven into the writing...and everyone is claiming some 'learning' from the event......by reading between the lines it appears that probably DBS learned most. And that must be good to ensure that the relationship between their people and the different loco owners continues to work for the benefit of all. I suspect that it is not lost to DBS that prestige operations such as the OE and Torbay Express and access to top quality locos such as Clan Line and Tornado are good for their image. So well done to all for bringing this matter to a satisfactory end.

Care to expand on that a bit please? It was all very mysterious at the time - repeated injector failures with no apparent cause IIRC?

Yes quite. Do they shoot you if you divulge what the magazine actually said?

Another case of beating about the bush, if people aren't prepared to expand fully, then don't bother at all. Too much winding up on here. It's only steam locos, not a national secret endangering the country.

No cloak and dagger stuff here, basically the injector body was worn out. A small amount of steam was leaking past the sealing faces and thus the injector was becoming hot with use so would not pick up. This is why the injectors worked during FTR but troublesome out on the runs. A temporary repair was made that got the loco to (nearly) Crewe before becoming faulty again. A new injector body has been cast and machined. Reading the society mag. there was a huge amount of co-operation between locomotive owning groups, volunteers, heritage railways and commercial engineering companies. It is this co-operation that should be applauded and we should not making up reasons to criticise the MNLPS for not disclosing info.

I wasn't. I was criticising post no 282 for the lack of actual information

Sorry about that apparent mysteriousness. Yes, details as in post 286. Also the implied observation in the text that, as with all engines, sometimes the handling of the loco is critical to optimum operation. In this case it seems that too much water in the boiler and a massive fire when it wasn't needed caused 28 to overcook and prime badly. As injectors don't like boiling water, it's hardly surprising that things went the way that they did. Fortunately all the right things were done at the time by everybody concerned. The good news, as I said, is that much has been gained by those who are trusted with steam on the main line. The sad news is that it has been at a considerable cost to the society - lost revenue, repairs etc etc.

Excellent news, and something that the owners of the four MNs going into restoration/overhaul can consider for future reference. Sorry to hear about the financial side, but at least the MNLPS can look forward to a future of relatively peaceful operation (hopefully with fingers crossed and touching everything made of wood!).

Injectors DO like boiling water. They combine boiling water [under pressure from the boiler] with cold feed water [from the tender/side tanks/etc.] to top-up boiler water levels as necessary.
The points you raised [" ... caused 28 to overcook and prime badly."] would not, of themselves, cause the feed water in the tender to become "boiling" and stop injectors from working.
As has been written before - the primary cause was found to be faulty [worn] injector(s).

What type of injectors are you talking about? As far as I am aware, injectors use water from a tender or tanks and live steam or exhaust steam. At no time does the use of boiling water come into the equation.

For those interested, the issue of the society magazine (referred to earlier in the thread) containing the report into the injector failure has been added to the society's website. Just go to the homepage and scroll down (PDF file). Home

For anyone who is interested, next Saturday's VSOE luncheon special is taking a different route to the usual Surrey Hills according to UK Steam Info. A chance to see Clan Line (running as 35017) running via Maidstone east and Deal. t1203a.htm

Sorry everyone - route has reverted back to Surrey Hills. (can't seem to copy the link for some reason). Most intriguing as to why the route was changed and then changed back.
