Quite frankly, I don't know what the bee in your smokebox is about regarding Mr. Martin's post, but I think you should apologise. There's being to the point and just being plain rude.

Aye, maybe I did jump in at the deep end, when it later transpired that SAC Martin was not aware of the Clan group being asked to leave Swanage. However, shouldn't we all wait until the Clan people make an announcement as to where they intend to build Hengist.

I'm happy to draw a line under it if we can get back to talking about the engine in question.

So the question remains, where? There has to come a point where one wonders whether or not it would be more commercially viable, if not practically completely ideal, to go with a non rail related warehouse space for it. As long as it has enough space and is secure it's possible to do.

It might make it more aquard when it comes to testing a rolling chassis etc, but if it means the thing gets built surely thats worth it?

I'm sure that the Hengist group will consider all options and pick the best one.

I wonder how much it would cost to rent a corner of a shed at Eastleigh from Knights Rail - plenty of space there !
As mentioned above, you don't need to build it at a railway, you only need engineering facilities and the ability to move it by road to a railway when the time comes.

Perhaps that would be something the chaps at the MHR could advise them on, show them who to ask give an idea of costs, etc.

I would imagine it would be expensive mind

Right. The clan has been offered 8 homes. Of which they have narrowed it down to 3. I don't know any of them but I know there are three. When they decide which they Will announce it.

As for it being down south I don't think that's important. As most of the time I meet them they have there sales stand at either GCR or battlefield or barrow hill. I would have thought the location might be closer to the midland. But I'm only guessing as that's where the new board seem to live and it would make sense to have it near where the working parties are.

At least its a case of being offered a home, rather than being seen as imposing themselves upon an organisation. This is good enough news in itself.

That is positive news indeed. Heres hoping the project gets an ideal home.

Whether you love stds or hate them, proper new build projects like this are important to the continuation of the preservation movement :)

I look forward to seeing her in steam!

Great to see all your comments folks, as soon as we have financed the 3 stretchers, £50k approx, and found our new 'home' I am sure the 'Clan Project' progress will be rapid. It has been a great relief to have homes offered rather than going looking for somewhere.
Thanks for all your support, and if you have any questions about the project feel free to PM me or go on our website www.72010-hengist.org where you can email me direct.
Many thanks to NP for making this site so folk can exchange discussion and news.

Latest news, the first main cast frame stretcher pattern has been ordered, so now we just need to maintain cash flow to achieve 3 big castings already next year for the frame assembly to begin!

The patterns and castings will cost in the region of £50k. After that they will need to be machined. Hope to machine all three together to achieve possible benefit from 'Batch Processing'.

For everyone's information, the first of the patterns for the cast steel stretchers will be ready for collection on 12th November, several weeks earlier than originally expected. fantastic to have real progress to report.

I am not in favour of renaming Hengist to Clan McDonalds: I just can't imagine Ronald McDonald on the footplate even if the sponsorship is worth a load of dosh..

Clanchemy is the magical process of turning money into steam engines - so im not fussy
I think the 'Golden arches' M on the red background name plate will look fine... and if ronald wants to help out as an 'owners rep' then thats fine as well.

Hope that doesn't happen. Their biggest rival might then choose to sponsor a GWR 4-6-o.
