I’ve been meaning to start a “what ever happened to” thread for a while; I often think about a piece of rolling stock or item that such and such group/line recovered only to realize that I haven’t seen/read anything about said item for years.

So being generally Southern bias most of mine relate to the old SR but equally I’m sure there are many others whom might have been thinking the same about other lesser railways ;-)

Anyways here you go these are my ones, if you have any real information on these “what ever happened too’s “ I would be interested to know the status/fate.

    1. Stewarts Lane wheel lathe – My memory says an individual/group brought the lathe for Dinting in the 1980’s (?) but with the closure of that site did the lathe get scrapped or moved to the KWVR?
    2. The Plym Valley Railway, if I recall correctly they were donated the LSWR 3 road footbridge and platform canopy of Plymouth (Friary?) station when it was being demolished – do these items still exist in the undergrowth somewhere on the PVR?
    3. a couple of Longmoor Military railway LSWR style/design foot bridges reputedly removed and stored at the East Somerset Railway in the late 1960’s– Obviously these must be several decades in store, do they still exist?
    4. Bass Brewery wagon turntable donated to the Mid Hants in the 1970’s – I remember seeing the remains outside the goods shed at Alresford in the early 1980’s – is this still with the MHR or scrapped?
    5. LSWR six wheel tender ex-Barry from 30499, sold for use on 31625 and moved to the MHR, last I saw of this it was at the very end of the headshunt at Ropley, still exist or is this now gone for scrap?
    6. Tunbridge Wells West – at the time of closure and prior to the then “TWERPS” group taking full control of the shed, the former SR signal gantry was removed and stored (donated?) to the fledgling railway society , I remember it there a few years later after the railway got going. Did it survive the scrap man?
    7. Southampton Central clock tower and war memorial – I understand that large parts of this retained after demolition due to the tower being a dedicated war memorial to SR staff of both world wars. – Does any of this structure still exist in store and what happened to the actual carved stone ‘memorial’ ?
    8. S5600S form Maunsell CK converted to a observation/route training coach in the 60's by BR, sold and moved to the KESR and then the Rother Valley only to be extersivly burnt. Reputedly moved to Ramparts for restoration - Does this coach still exist or was it beyond repair and chopped?

I remember seeing the wagon turntable at the country end/down side of Medstead and Four Marks station across from the wagon yard.

Still there I saw it today.

So is 5600 being restored for use on the KESR, or will it go elsewhere?

I'm aware that the Swanage Railway often uses Rampart for restoring coaches, and another Maunsell coach from the KESR has recently gone to Rampart for restoration before going to Swanage. So it makes me wonder if 5600 is heading to Swanage.

How about the ex G.A Day diesel mechanical shunter used at the MHR in the early years. It was cosmetically restored at Ropley about 6 years ago, but then vanished.

I understand the Stewarts Lane wheel lathe was scrapped by the ELR.

The footbridge was still in existence a couple of weeks ago when I called in, but I'm not sure about the canopy. They also recovered the components of the station building from Billacombe on the ex-GWR Yealmpton branch, which I understand are stored awaiting reconstruction.
As stated above, this is still in existence and is at Rampart, with no current plans for it to go to Swanage.

One I have asked about before (to no avail) was the (huge!) S.R. station entrance sign from Lydford, that was at Bodmin in GWS days, did it survive moves to Bugle and back?

    Whatever happened to:

The heritage rolling stock at Long Marston near Stratford Upon Avon? It was supposed to move to Sharpness this year but the Stratford and Broadway Website shows it still all at Long Marston. Some interesting stuff there.

As this started as a fairly local thread (to me!) - who remembers the ex Southern Railway 100 ton floating crane in Southampton Docks that used to be moored close to Town Pier? Anyone using the Hythe Ferry would sail past this rusting leviathan every day. It was still around in the seventies but must have been long since scrapped. Just wondered if there are any photos or records of its final resting place? It was a beast.

The signal gantry resided in the weeds for a number of years before it was cut up and the RSJ sections used for the construction of the roof over the shop in the engine shed. A shame but there was little chance of it being re-used due to its size and the fledgling railway not being able to afford new RSJ.

The lattice posts still survive and are being reused in the signalling systems around the railway.

Thats a shame, I recall visiting the line with Peter Dean of the MHR S&T and enquiring if they would part with it as we would have liked it for Butts Jct, the TWERPS chaps said that they would let us know if they didn't want it.

Anyone know what happened to the coach part of the LSWR Drummond "Bug"? I remember seeing it at an open day of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Society at a
private address in Durley some time in the 70s / 80s but haven't heard a word about it anywhere since then.
