Does anyone know of suppliers of secondhand track in the UK, SE would be good. I'm working on report for a small heritage project and looking for the cost of 15m rail x4, about 10 sleepers and ties, and probably 20 ton of ballast (I'll probably use landscape fabric beneath the chippings if it ever gets the go ahead, although the old track bed is still there buried under a few inches of soil)

Most of the track will be buried to the top with ballast so there will only be one end sticking out that will hopefully have the full sleepers with ties and track showing.

    Hope someone can help.

The Midland and Great Northern used to run through the village where I live. The track will be aligned to be exactly where the original dual track line went. In the village is a nature reserve and one corner is the remains of the trackbed. Its been 60 years since the line closed and most of it is now a bypass. A lot of people use the footpath so I just want to remind people of what was here, even if its in a small way.

Most people will probably think I'm bonkers, including the Parish council and Wildlife trust who will need to sign it off if its too succeed. Then there's the financing to sort out. My hopes aren't very high but if I don't try I'll never know. I'm currently putting together a report to see what they think.

    First question
How accessible is the site by road?
2 Reasons ease of delivery of material preferably by hiab fitted lorry and the other how difficult will it be to nick?
As soon as you put it in someone will be looking to weigh it in.
You may be better looking at some of the preserved lines in the area to supply the material especially the larger longer established lines who maybe doing some relay work of there own and will be looking to dispose of the materials.
I see you are SE so possibly the Bluebell may be an option.
However M+Gn may mean the North Norfolk may be a better choice. or the Nene Valley.

Yeah now you mention it I could try the Nene Valley as they're within 10 miles. The site is not very accessible by road, a new housing estate is going to be built close by some time in the future and it will be blocked off forever once that's started. I suspect all the materials will have to be barrowed quite a distance to it unless I can get permission to cross some private land. I have to admit I did think about it getting nicked, sad times we live in, but hopefully having the tracks tied to the sleepers will create a deterrent. Thanks though.

Hmmm - I know this spot well - Eye Green!
I also remember the old overhead ropeway with buckets still being in place between there and Dogsthorpe!
