    At http://www.flickr.com/photos/45100355@N04/sets/72157626707135729/
there is a set of pictures of the Mk2 - 2e coaches at RAF Dalton

    At http://www.flickr.com/photos/45100355@N04/5771563642/in/set-72157626707135729
it says '"They are up for auction shortly, but I fear the price of metal means they are going to the scrapman'".

At a posting at the bottom of the thread at
    www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=61136
    it says
"' All of the coaches had 'lot' nunbers allocated and the fella there reckoned that they were up for auction soon so will probably go to the great railway scrapyard in the sky......or the strategic reserve '"
    AND
    in another posting it says
"' [the Mk2 coaches] are for sale from this company if anyone wants one for their gardens
    www.cwharrison.co.uk '"

When I messaged the guy who posted the pictures he replied as follows: -

    "' Hello Alfred,

and thanks for your email, I am glad you like my photos.

When I visited the site, the old guy that runs the bus business from the same place told me they were going to be auctioned, this was backed up by most of the coaches having A4 printed signs stuck to them identifying the lot number, I found a website also for the aucitoneers, (but for the life of me cannot remember what it was now, sorry).

Its good to hear that some of the coaches will have a chance for preservation, many of them were in good condition, despite being sat outside at Sinderby for years. I think the thing I liked about the site was that you could see nearly every livery that the MK2 has worn over the years, it was like a step back in history.

    regards

    Ian. '"

    (Via Flickr Mail)

This may be just a rumour (one of many.....)

But I thought you would be able to make the relevent enquiries and see if there is any truth in this.

It would be sad to see a large collection of recent Mk2s scrapped.

Does anyone know of any MK2a compartment stock that might be going for scrap, apart from these coaches? Some LNER Thompson stock use Beclawat sliding door runners that seem to be identical to those in early Mk 2s and the LNERCA needs two such runners to complete Thompson TK 1623. The part that attaches to the door would be easy to make and we have discovered that the rubber wheels are available from Railpart, but the C channel attached to the corridor sidethat they run in might be difficult to have made. If we can obtain some ready-made examples that would save a lot of work.

Why are you bothering everyone over these coaches? Can you afford to buy them?

the question that should being asked is, are the coaches restorable and for how much? Mk 2's have inbuilt corrosion problems being as they are monocoque construction are not an easy restoration compared to Mk1's we all know how to deal with mk1 and the ends rusting out, but has anyone yet done a heavy on a mk2? do you need to place the body in a gig if you have to remove structural framework , all ive ever done on Mk2's is to clean up and paint them green , the former green train was purchased in good mechanical and structural condition streight out of NSE service , i dont expect that any coaches that have been in storage will be as easy , and as the Mk 2 ages what else will come to light, i cant speek for other railways, but lately we are finding our mk1 coaches are needing more work than we expected with drawhook and buckeye pin problems becoming regular reworking items on every exam even before an 18 monthly becomes due meaning a coach lift and bogie out each time but when you think that even the youngest mk1 has to be 50 years old, the mk2 is only some 12years younger

Let's put this one to bed shall we:

    1) the coaches are heavily stripped, since last year, all the MA sets, batteries, dynamos/alternators, copper has gone making them a lot of work to restore
    2) Mk2 bodywork is perfectly repairable, the monoque construction really is a myth. Most of them however have been left without windows and doors making 90% of them fit for scrap only and the other 10% only if you were very desperate
    3) the person who owns them has no interest in selling them whatsoever, they will all go for scrap to pay off his debts that he's amassed over the years

And finally, Alfred you have already done damage by making lots of pointless enquiries to people. Did you ever have any intention of purchasing these vehicles? If not why did you contact the auctioneer as you do the serious people absolutely no favours.
