These 2ft gauge lines are unusual in having been established on closed standard gauge branch lines.

The Bala Lake is on part of the Great Western Ruabon - Llangollen - Barmouth Junction route, closed in 1965. (The standard gauge Llangollen Rly also occupies part of this route.) 22 photos taken last August can be seen here:

The South Tynedale is at the southern end of the North Eastern's Haltwhistle - Alston branch, closed in 1976. 49 photos taken in 2008 during the line's silver jubilee gala can be seen here:

And photos of the Alston branch shortly before it closed in 1976 can be seen here:

Not that unusual, surely? Off the top of my head there's the WHHR in Porthmadog, the Brecon Mountain Railway, the Teifi Valley, Launceston Steam Railway and the Welsh Highland between Caernarfon and Dinas...

    about Bala lake rly

When I visited-for the first time- this charming railway one member of the Board(maybe the late Mr Barnes, I don't remember) told me that it was their aim to extend the end of the line to the "café" quite in the center of Bala: a project which would have boosted the popularity of that railway
Since I have never heard about this valuable and exciting project........I'll be grateful if someone could reply about
    thanks
    regards
    noel
