At a rough estimate about 2000. Fortunately the company will hire in a sleeper changer but there's usually plenty of follow up work, should keep us busy. Any volunteers would be welcome.

Yikes! Sounds like a lot of sleepers. Do they all have to be replaced before any passengers can be carried along the line (and I'm thinking of the shareholder special rumoured to be running to Endon before the end of the year) ?

Great photos FJR8642. Looks like a lot of fun was had on the weed-killing train. Taking the first real train down the line for however many years must be quite memorable.

In the photos, the sleepers look as though they are concrete. Are there damaged concrete sleepers that need replacing or is it rotten wooden sleepers?

I see George has arrived safely today at Froghall.

Does anyone know if he will be running this Sunday, on the last service-running day before the 'break'?

Good day again today, trying out the refurbished and remotored Permequipe down the Valley. Did a lot of smaller jobs that required doing with some distance between them. It should make life easier when working on the Cauldon and Stoke lines where there is limited access, a couple of photos of it in its nice new coat of paint.

What's not proper about the Permaquip! I think it looks quite quaint when it's going along :)

The permequipe reminds me of that brilliant film made by Buster Keaton, called the Railrodder. I often dreamed of owning one and just skittling off down the tracks on a fantasy journey. :)

This is fantastic news for this project. As Greg says this has been scrutinised at the highest level and is the only national railway project to receive funding. They must have submitted a comprehensive bid to succeed. Well done!

Indeed excellent news, and it's not just Stoke but also Alton Towers and Leek which appear to be firmly in the frame - at least as far as planning goes.

But as for only national railway project, what about the Todmoden Curve - see elsewhere on here.

Great news for the project. On the news Nick Clegg that every £1 invested by the government will bring £6 of private money so it would appear the project is looking at an £8 million spend?

Good news indeed but I wouldn't place too much reliance on Clegg's figure which has been plucked out of the air for political reasons.

I think you'll probably find thats an average, i'd be surprised if they all proposed a similar ratio of public/private funding.

before you get two carried away, the funding is less than a quarter they could have expected under the old regional development fund that they scrapped.

I am sure that any money is welcomed. Great to see this project getting support.

I have a question about the overall plan. Has it been looked into, in the future (once the railway is up and running) of extending from Alton to Rocester to take goods in/out of JCB?
Good luck with the current work you are doing and I hope you get the line open for the initial freight as soon as possible to get the money coming in.

Maybe less than what was once available, but £1.6million is still £1.6million!
