Try stopping at the Old Brunswick Hotel in Kingman Az opposite the old station, 2xgrade crossings with a good long blow for each, no way you will sleep, 2-3 trains an hour along the BNSF Transcon.
Did UP 3985 on the Denver Post Cheyenne rodeo train in 2004, seats in the forward dome, 07.00 depart Denver, back late. Wonderful day out, it rained at the rodeo creating almost unknown conditions for some of the wranglers, green horns took some of the top prizes at a result. One guy created a ski-wall of liquid mud whilst being "pulled along" by his steer.
Full food and memorabilia for the day, excellent organisation.

Ralph, I'm no expert on the radio. I know that it is the communication system "This train is here".
I also Know that in regards to the when steam is on the railroad it detects hot journals only problem is that the heat is coming from the firebox.
"You have a defect at milepost ______ hot axle right side _____, than the engineer calls in to the dispacther sp 4449etc.

Ralph - the radio is the despatchers talking to the train crew. In the old days train orders were handed to loco crew by wayside signalmen. Now they are contacted by radio.

For those who don't understand, that is my rather poor attempt at a bit of light hearted humour. Ref. the topic on 6201 75th anniversary run.:behindsofa:

The engineer probably has a release that he can pass the hot box detector without stopping , but has to call in to verify his train identity
