LMS Patriot Project Updates

Good question... I went to the Brighton Atlantic Project pages to see how they were doing with their fabricated cylinders... the answer is amazingly well!

I think this is the first large loco to have fully fabricated cylinders so we'll have to wait and see.

They were probably the first to be made, but they probably won't be the first to run - a new cylinder has been fabricated at Grosmont for 76079 to replace its cracked one, and is to be fitted this winter, with loco (hopefully) returning to traffic towards the end of next year. It's also getting an intermediate boiler overhaul at the same, though, and they seem to have a habit of turning into far bigger jobs than expected.

An LMS 2-6-2T or 2-6-4T had fabricated cylinders fitted experimentally, in 1947 I believe, although someone else on here will have more details. So we're only following in the footsteps of the old railways!

I'm still interested to hear about the pros and cons though?

 

AFAIK the tyres on Stanier wheels were fixed by 'Gibson Rings', but these tyres seem to follow the BR pattern of just being shrunk on. I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind the change (assuming of course that my observation is correct).

The pros will almost certainly be strength and, for a one-off, cost. No pattern for a start. The cons will be the problems with the steam and exhaust passages, which are probably much easier to do with a casting and might entail some complex machining and welding, depending on the design, as you will need to replicate many of the cardinal points of the original.. Corrosion might become a problem in later life.

 

But these are not Stanier wheels? Forgive me as im not the most amazing person when it comes to the Engineering side. So i dont know the answers. There are people on her who will know tho. But with regards to Fabricated Cylinders yes i have heard there was an LMS 2-6-4t (i believe it was a fowler but again i could be wrong) which had them fabricated in BR. Ill email our Chairman and see what he says.

 

The 2-6-4T was indeed a Fowler one(42424) but it had them from new in 1933. That is, according to LMS Loco Profiles No.3.

 

Anyone who doubts fabricated cylinders should note that Blanche has been running up and down the Festiniog with them at twice its design speed, and with much heavier loads than it encountered in its supposedly working life, since 1972. Regularly covering over 10,000 miles a year. No problems have been encountered and they are due their first re-bore in the near future. 2 pairs were made and I believe the best 2 were chosen.

They were also made at crewe for the standard gauge obsessives out there.

 

I never said I doubted fabricated cylinders. As a layman I didn't know what, if any, differences there might be in normal service and so asked that I may further my knowledge.

Today is a good day to remember one of the reasons for building this locomotive. It is not perhaps the main reason but it is not a gimmick (I accept that others may think otherwise and that is their right) and the LMS/LNWR tradition of naming one of their locomotives with this connection needs, in my view, to be reactivated. If all goes well, this time next year The Unknown Warrior should be sufficiently well advanced to form a powerful backdrop to a remembrance ceremony at Llangollen if one is organised. Wallet time again I think!

Well it was our AGM today and we had a good turn out. 51 people in all. A couple of things really. As everyone knows our target is to be built and running mainline by Nov 2018. But to be doing so we need to really be finished 1 year before that. So today it was confirmed that the Naming of the Loco will also not happen until Nov 11th 2018. So that means that as long as we manage to raise enough money to be complete on time the running in will be nameless, or to help raise funds i should say if you want to see it named another patriot YOU have the chance to see it, or maybe a heritage railway will want to name it for a gala. Something to think about.
The other thing really is that to complete the rolling chassis for June next year we need to find an additional 20k. I have to say it was a very good and positive AGM. We will have to see where we take the AGM next year, any ideas are most welcome, as we like to move it so more people are able to attend.

I wouldn't want it thought that I disagree with the name this engine has been given, it seems to me to be the right thing to do, but it is a mistake to think that the LNW/LMS had a tradition of naming engines after military events. The LNW had a tradition of naming it's engines and was pretty promiscuous concerning the names it bestowed, but the LMS didn't at all. There were a few names of regiments, which were new, the naming of the Jubilees after places in the Empire, names of ships and admirals but there was no plans after WWII to name any engines after events in that conflict. The GW did, so too the SR but not the LMS.
