Following on from the Pontypool incident there now seems something has happened at Grosmont resulting in the closure of the line to Whitby. POSSIBLY another runaway involving a teak coach & buffer stops. This is only what I have picked up elsewhere & not my story, hence the word "possibly" in capitals.

Why are accidents now 'incidents', when they are obviously accidents?

    Re: NYMR Incident?

Because the word 'accident' suggests no-one is to blame, and that these things happen, whereas an incident can be someone's fault and you can sue the pants off them and send them down for manslaughter. That's my, admittedly cynical, interpretation. The recent M5 accident is a case in point - all the media reporting I read was out to blame someone: fast motorists, careless lorry drivers or the firework display. The fact that it was awfully foggy which is no-one's fault seemed forgotten.

Odd, you would have thought an Incident was a verry small accident!

    Re: NYMR Incident?

Use of the word incident rather than accident is not a new idea but is a forward move in trying to focus thinking as to why these things happen and by doing so act to prevent them happening in future.

The word "accident" suggests that the happening was "accidental" - ie nothing could have been done to prevent it leading to misplaced complacency in looking for & curing the cause - the wrong mindset if elimination of the cause is the objective.

The word "incident" does not imply one way or the other why an event happened but makes investigation possible without the unhelpful mindset that "these things just happen".

This is not a matter of being PC - more one of clear thinking and expression.

    Re: NYMR Incident?

It seems to me that the word incident is often used to avoid categorizing anything. i.e a suicide is not an accident but can be described as an incident. It also allows movement in the judgement of what has happened. i.e. the suicide, if announced as such, could be found to have been accidental possibly causing distress or offence. One can also use 'incident' to refer to a minor problem such as an animal reported on the line without being specific.

Having said this my normal mental response to hearing such an announcement is to think 'well that tells me nothing, what has happened' so it's actually self defeating. I am left merely annoyed and the announcer has wasted their time.

    Re: NYMR Incident?

Fair point - sometimes I get the impression however that when something has 'just happened' that isn't good enough and someone will be found to blame.

Incident is the realisation of an unexpected event, or the realisation of a Risk (expected event).

Accident is a conclusion of an incident, other conclusions being problems, issues, bugs, faults, natural disasters etc.

    Re: NYMR Incident?

Anyway, sorry to have hijacked this thread. Hope that the situation at the Moors, however it happened, is easily restored to normality and that no-one was hurt.

    National Rail;

An operating incident is causing disruption at Grosmont.

Because of this, buses are replacing trains between Grosmont and Whitby, with journey times being extended by up to 30 minutes. This will continue on Wednesday 16 November.

There is no current estimate for when a normal service will resume.

    Re: NYMR Incident?

I saw a traffic cop on a television program say that there is no such thing as a road accident. They are all down to one of two things - mechanical failure or driver error.

Pretty much the same for railways as well, either error on the part of the staff or failure of the equipment/infrastructure.

I'm confused, I had an incident yesterday when I accidentally deleted a load of stuff on my computer. I don't know now whether I've had an incident or an accident.:rolleyes1:
I hope nobody was hurt at NYMR and they can sort the problem out quickly.

I think the use of "incident" is an Americanism that has crept into the English language....

    Re: NYMR Incident?

Just another example of creeping americanisation, which is so annoying. Another one that gets me is the expression "so and so has passed" - "passed away" was the old term, which made a little more sense.

    Re: NYMR Incident?

I understand the collision (neither of the other two!!) is on the river bridge, not the railway bridge. I have heard that there is a runaway collision with the Gresley coaches, is that true? Much more serious sounding.

One and a half teaks beyond the buffers apparently, so yes it is serious unfortunately.
