I posted in the wrong thread. But since I've posted again on this thread does anyone remember how the Thomson A2/2 faired in BR service where they any good? They look odd with the cylinder behind the front truck.

    Thanks

The Class A2 were a very mixed bunch: the A2/2 were simply rebuilds of the Gresley P2 Mikados (60501-506) whilst the A2/1 were essentially A2/2 with a Gresley V2 boiler (60507-510) and the A2/3 were Thomson new build developed from the A2/2(60500; 511-524). Thomson retired in 1946 hence the naming of 60500 to mark the 2000th locomotive built by Doncaster works and the retirement of the incumbent CME; Peppercorn reverted to Gresley principles in layout of the cylinders and the final batch (60525-539 were built between December 1947 and August 1948.

My understanding from a friend who was a fireman at New England in the early 1960s were that the Thomson locos were unwieldy and liable to cracked frames whilst he found them difficult to fire. Certainly the Thomson locos were the first to be withdrawn with the A2/2 first to go quickly followed by the A2/1 whilst the A2/3s lasted a little longer into 1963. Certainly from my notes New England had 60513 / 23 in store during February 1963; 60514 / 20 / 23 in store during May 1963; 60500 / 20 / 23 in store during June 1963; by the end of June they had been moved from New England and Gavin Morrison records [The Power of the A2s pub. Oxford Publishing Co] that they were scrapped at Doncaster shortly after these dates.
