I'm heading up the WCML for the first time at the end of the month for the Winter CME - can anyone recommend a location between Tebay and Shap? I know the M6 and the OHL are a problem but there seems to be a few shots that appear of northbound trains on Shap.

There are other locations but as I've never been on the lineside at Shap I haven't a great deal of idea where they are.

Come off the northbound M6 onto Tebay services. Turn left between the shop and petrol station and drive past the Westmorland Hotel on the left. You will then come off the service area onto a country lane. Turn left and in about 200 yards there's a bridge over the WCML. Some good spots around there.

If there's any sunshine, then at the booked time of around 11am, the light is really tricky and will be pretty much straight behind the line. There are some good curves on Shap, so at this time of year you might just manage a glint if you can get the angle right. Up near the summit and right at the foot of the climb below Greenholme are probably the most favourable and there are a few spots in the Lune Gorge on the east side at that time of day. If you want a more conventionally lit shot, then there are lots of possibilities on Grayrigg and around Lowgill.

As Dairypaul says 11AM is a bad time between Greenholme and Shap Wells, the better possibilities are again as Dairypaul says Grayrigg area
There are quite a few here including the 2010 Winter CME AT Greenholme which if you look at Dees pic you can see where the sun is trying to get out
If there is no chance of sun theres a B/W Shot at Salterwath
