No, not working for me. Perhaps someone who knows about putting vids on could do it? Look for 'The great steam race' Newcastle to Maitland, on utube. Well worth it!

The Aussies certainly have fun with their steam if you have a look round on Youtube, also quite a few antiquated designs seem to be let out to play, the sort of stuff that would be unthinkable on our Mainlines, i sure i seen a vid of two anciant looking 4-4-0's top n tailing!.

Blimey! With all the warnings we get about the overhead in the UK I was pretty surprised to see the fireman gaily hosing the coal in the tender under the 25kv (?)......

    Great video though!

Unthinkable in the UK? Possibly not, provided you can find a 4-track section with a suitable gap in the timetable. It wasn't an out-and-out race - more a well-choreographed parallel run. So where in the UK could you try something similar? Didcot - Reading? Remember 44932 pacing Ollie between York and Church Fenton last summer?

Something similar happened between Templecombe and Yeovil Junction in the mid-80s during one of the Blackmore Value Express seasons. The up-line is bi-directional, and City Of Wells was "paced" by a class 33 diesel pulling an observation saloon. Rumour has it that the 33 couldn't keep up, but that can't be right, can it? ;-)

CityRail system between Sydney and Newcastle is 1500vDC. Seem to recall DC needs direct contact and doesn't 'flash over' like AC - over surprising distances too. Still I'd think twice before risking it.

Thanks for the clarification Peter, I did think it looked a bit risky! I'm no expert when it comes to AC/DC!

DC electricity can flash over as well.

Best not to get too close to any uninsulated high voltages, all can be injurious to health.

The Black one (3526) was built by the New South Wales Governmnet Railways work shops in Eveleigh (Australia)
The Maroon one (3265) was built by Beyer, Peacock Manchester (UK)
